Title: Help Me Obi Wan Kanobi, You're My Only Hope
Post by: FlamingCobra on September 30, 2011, 08:00:37 pm
Every time I fly the GTF Achilles from ED, my computer decides to BSoD!

WHY?

here's my .tbm file:

$Name:                  GTF Achilles
$Short name:            fighter3t-01

+Armor: XSTR("Light", 2941)
+Manufacturer: XSTR("Galactic Terran Intelligence", 2942)
+Description: XSTR( " ", 2943)
$end_multi_text
+Tech Description:
XSTR("The GTF Achilles is a prototype designed since the Second Shivan Incursion as replacement for the old Myrmidon space superiority fighter. Although the Myrmidon performed its role well, it saw limited use during the incursion because of its lack of weapon compatibility and its small missile capacity.

The Achilles attempts to merge the strong points of the Myrmidon and the Ulysses while simultaneously incorporating high weapons capability, without sacrificing speed or maneuverability. Only Special Operations Command has had access to this fighter. Word is, it handles more smoothly than any other fighter in the fleet. Its excellent maneuverability in conjunction with a high top speed make the Achilles one of the best-suited craft for dogfighting. Unfortunately, these strong points are achieved only with the sacrifice of valuable armor and shielding protection, making the Achilles virtually undefended in comparison to heavier craft.

Consequently, the design is being reworked so the next-generation space superiority fighter will not have this issue.", -1)

#End

I haven't actually been able to generate a debug log of the incident. It's happened.... twice  :doubt:

I'll post one if I do.

... did you forget #End at the end ?

of my .tbm file? No.

However, I believe the first time it happened I got shot. And the BSoD error message was really long. And I do not remember what it was and I did not write down what it said.

And the second time it happened an enemy ship collided with me. And the only thing the BSoD said was

Code: [Select]
HARDWARE FAILURE
or maybe it was hardware malfunction...

anyway... can you guys help me?

oh, btw, in game, I do not have an icon of my ship on my HUD. Could that have anything to do with it?

Additionally, I would like to know why this was moved. It's not that I'm trying to contradict administrators or anything, but imho....

.... Blue Screens of Death and Hardware Failures/Malfunctions are "technical problems" rather than "questions and answers of modding"

If its BSODing, its probably your PC.
Probably.

First up, don't post threads with titles like this.

Second, please at least try and generate a log.

Thirdly, this does not look like an FSO problem.

Fourthly, moved to FSO support where it probably belongs.

Perhaps try running a diagnostic. Perhaps something in Achilles' mesh causes it to strain the system more than usual when something collides with it. Check your system/drivers/other important software for any damage, try running a benchmark, some heat monitoring software and make sure something in your hardware didn't fry.

A blue screen error almost definitely wouldn't be caused just by Freespace 2 per-say - likely something else, potentially driver or hardware-related. Bear in mind that the point of a blue screen error is to give some sort of indication of what caused Windows to fall off it's barstool - it's important to take note of exactly what error message it's throwing you (along with any associated error code data) to have some chance at narrowing down what the problem is. Otherwise something like this can be very difficult to diagnose.

My graphics settings are on "very high" and my mod references MediaVPs_3612. However, I have never had any problems with FS2 as far as gameplay until now.

It could just be windows vista's fault, since that operating system is unstable anyway.

Another possibility is that when I got shot or took a hit, the game tried to display the appropriate shield damage in my ship's HUD icon. Since that wasn't there, it couldn't do anything and just decided to BSoD.

Another thing about the situation is the first time the game just froze up for a really long time and then decided to BSoD. The second time the game froze filled up with green, purple, and gray lines for about 1 second and then immediately BSoD'd.

I will try to replicate the error and write down whatever my computer says.

EDIT: Ran the game in the debugger. Selected the mission. The loading screen took a very long time and after loading all the way, freespace stops and i here a "ding" and I get a black screen. I can't do anything. The first time I hit the escape key and freespace closed.

The second time I ran the debugger the same thing happened when I got to the black screen I hit the enter key and FS2 came back up. Then it returned to the loading screen. Then I here another "ding" and a debug dialogue box comes up. it says:

Code: [Select]
Could not load in the HUD shield ani: fighter3t-03-hud

ntdll.dll! ZwWaitForSingleObject + 21 bytes
kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes

kernel32.dll! BaseThreadInitThunk + 14 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlCreateUserProcess + 140 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlCreateProcessParameters + 78 bytes

what does this mean and should I hit Yes to break into Debugger or hit No to continue?

EDIT2: I figure during the black screen another dialogue box came up but I couldn't read it because I couldn't press ALT-Tab or do anything basically.

I, uh, moved it to modding (from support) because of my "if the problem is because of the user's own modding, it's a modding issue, not an installation/startup issue" attitude.

what does this mean and should I hit Yes to break into Debugger or hit No to continue?
If you are a 1337 programmer with the appropriate tools (debugger included), you could break into debugger. Otherwise, to continue, click "No" to continue.

I am not "leet."

And judging by the first line of the dialogue box (Could not load in the HUD shield ani: fighter3t-03-hud) it is possible that my hypothesis is correct.

EDIT: I hit no. The mission began and I intentionally collided with a capship on my side.... and nothing happened. I did take some hull damage but no BSoD yet.

EDIT2: I have been bombarded with laser fire. Still no BSoD. However, I do have a very low FPS rate (4-10). Aren't games usually supposed to run at 60 FPS?

EDIT3: I changed my graphics settings from "very high" to "high" in an attempt to improve performance. Nothing happened. Then I switched my graphics settings to "low." fs2_open_3_6_12d_INF Crashed. I got a black screen. Could not make that black screen go away unless I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Found an error message. FreeSpace 2 Open has stopped working.

Is this a modding error or a technical support error?

Depends quite heavily on the game and on the hardware running the game.

Code: [Select]
FreeSpace version: 3.6.12
Please use a Nightly build (Or wait for the 3.6.14 RCs, which should be appearing Any Day Now(TM)).

Not to question your authority, The E, because you are right 99% of the time (and I found that out the hard way), but what would using a Nightly build have to do with my issue?
Title: Re: Help Me Obi Wan Kanobi, You're My Only Hope

1. 3.6.12 builds are a year old. Information generated by them isn't really helpful any longer.
2. The crash mentioned at the very end of the log comes from an issue that I know is fixed in .13 builds.

Oh, and thirdly, you really should update your GPU drivers. The ones you are using are seriously outdated.

...oh.

I didn't realize it had been over a year since I last ran the FSO installer.

Well, how often should i run it? Like every two months?

It's not a question of the installer, since the installer doesn't download nightly builds. You have to get those manually, unfortunately.

Before I download those I was once recommended to get an SSE version or whatever since I have an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.33 GHz and 6GB of RAM.

However, when I ran that build I had weird green, purple, and gray lines everywhere. Kind of like the second time I got a BSoD (mentioned above).

What was that all about and should I get an SSE build anyway?

Yes, you should. If that happens again, you need to provide a debug log and screenshots.

Oh, and I remind you once again to please update your GPU drivers.

Meaning "google search <the name of your graphics card> +drivers"?

I will also assume that, since I read this thread www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65628.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65628.0)
and clicked on the SSE2 wikipedia link and found out that the Intel Core 2 is a CPU that supports SSE2 and I have an Intel Core 2, then I should get the SSE2 version and not the plain old SSE version. Because that might have something to do with it.

Furthermore, I'd like to know beforehand exactly what I should provide screenshots of in case the problem continues.

Go here: http://www.amd.com/de/pages/amdhomepage.aspx

On the right side, there's a drop-down where you can select a driver.

As for screenshots, you said you had weird graphical stuff happening. That's what we need screenshots of.

That didn't happen all of the time.

That weird graphical stuff only happened when switching screens (aka clicking on anything on the main menu, etc.)

and it occurred for like a split second during the switching process.

EDIT: I didn't know you were German. That's pretty cool.

Since this is an FSO support board and not an AMD support board, I suggest you use the power of the Google.

It is possible that you had antialiasing on in your driver settings. Weird things happened to me when I had driver-forced antialiasing on my Radeon.

Also, as I posted on another board, SSE2 builds weirdly make things worse. Regular builds do not.
