Title: RagingLoli's GTS Hygiea?
Post by: rscaper1070 on October 01, 2011, 07:49:15 pm
I was thinking a taking a stab at modeling something and I thought the GTS Hygiea was a pretty good candidate. I Googled it for some reference shots and found this (http://s676.photobucket.com/albums/vv127/lulzifer/). At first I wondered who this lulzifer could be and then I noticed our beloved GVD Typhon listed in the albums and knew it must be RagingLoli.

Does anybody know how to get hold of him? That's a great model and really should be ingame.

He was around here showing it off several months back.. but then he disappeared. Hades has been the most successful at getting his models from him for us. However, it does look to me that the poly count is really high for something like a support ship...

Ah, that must have been during my break from all things computer. Do you think he would mind if I used his model as reference? I don't presume to be able to do as great a job as that but I like a lot of the details.

That does seem overkill for an in-game Hygiea, but it's a pretty damn awesome model regardless.

I doubt he would care.

What's overkill won't be in a couple of years.  Plus, Hades' new Medusa seems to be on par in terms of detail w/ this Hygiea.  I suggest that if FSU has this model on hand, we should get it in-game.

Plus the amount of detail hardly matters when there's only one in any mission in any given time unless more are FREDed in. I'd love seeing this continued if at all possible.

I'll try to find and ask ragingloli for the mesh or his progress.

nope. Medusa is 17k polygons, and a support ship isn't much smaller.

which is in all honesty, overkill. Saboo made a goddamn good job at texturing it, and a good chunk of polies do show, no doubt about it. But i still think that 17k polies is a smidge much for a fighter model.

(ignore the above if the whole mesh is 17k, with the turret, lods, debris and the whole shebang included in that count)

17k polies for the base mesh of a cruiser sized ship is a bit on the low end for that scale.

Have you seen a ragingloli model? he does lovely work, but before you can even think about getting it in the engine, there is much, much optimisation and polygon reduction to do overall.

It's much easier to remove polies than it is to add them. I don't think we should worry about it until (if) we actually have the model.

Unless you have done actual modelling, shut up, okay?

lol?

Depends how the polies are. If they're all fused into one "object" then lolno.
Adding polies is ez. Just make moar boxes.

17k polies which is, yes, with the turret, modeled thrusters, and cockpit. Not lods though.

Hmm. Wait. I must have had a brainfart, and was thinking of texture resolution. ie, trivial to downsize, not so trivial to upsize.

Let's just say automatic poly reducers are less than awesome.
