Well, not yet.  I'll need some more pics and some decient views and experiance before I can go hog wild with MLCAD.  But for now, the GTD Lego:

so far i have a Deimos Corvette, a Aelous cruiser and a Fenris Cruiser, but i tried to make them scale to eachother..... (i started with the deimos) and its supposed to be about 900 meters right? i think its 26 lego dots long..... and the fenris is 14..  (fenris is 290 meters, right?)and the aelous is 13 dots long...... they are alil outta porportion (aeoulus supposed to be 330 meters i think) that and the fenris is "taller" than the deimos

Take a technic half-pin (IE, bump on one side, technic pin on the other) and insert the pin end into the ?x2 brick, through one of the center cylinders. This gives you a center mounted bump on the bottom of a brick. Attach the lever/antenna bit et voila.

I built a Fenris cruiser, and it's 17 studs long, I was gonna build an Aten cruiser to go with it, but my HD fried and I lost what little I had of it, luckily I uploaded my Fenris to Brickshelf.com, I'll get the link, and all those who have MLcad can dl my version of it!

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=5523

there it is, I'm also gonna build an Orion, on the same scale, about 200+ studs long! yes 200+ STUDS LONG.

Man, and after that, I might have to build a Lucy to match it, maybe even a Typhon too!! Maybe, just wait and see :)

I did everything in MLCAD, so I just flipped the gun and placed it there.  Nothing is holding it on by code.

Unless there's some fancy piece I missed, you can't actually do that, something that bums me out to no end.  Once I get the stuff together, I'll try something else, probably a Leviathan.  I like the little cruiser.

I downloaded MCLAD on sunday and have thought about how to make a lego Diemos, but im still trying to work out MCLAD itself.  I aim for it to be about 50 studs long, 1 stud per 12 meters of ship.
But ofcourse, thats a medium/long term project.

I notice a lot of you using "Legos" as a plural of "lego", I thought you would like to know that lego is a collective noun, like sheep, fish etc. So the plural would be the same as the singular.

Don't mind me, but if I don't complain about something at least ten times a day I will start to like things and have no agresseion.

Ok, after wee bit of practice with MLCAD, here's my second ship:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/beatspete/FSships/aelous.ldr

Its an Aelous cruiser, and i think its aobut 43 studs long. I think itrs pretty good, would have much structural strength if it were a real lego model, but it looks good.
You can download it above, i tried uploading a picture but had problems, sorry.

I also made a diemos, it was my first one, about 35 studs long, looks good from the side but its a bit narrow widthways.
Cant upload that at the moment though,

The Valk one is bad, I agree, but the Herc one isn't half that bad.  I just don't have the experiance to increase the volume easily.

In any case, I give up.  beatspete's ships are soo good, there's no way I'll meet it.  That and I'm lazy.

Thank God for those people - I've been disgusted by how LEGO has been just making up new pieces for every little model kit they come out with that doesn't have just the right piece, instead of using their noggins. Looks like these guys are saving the name of Leog. :D

I have really only been keeping track of the Technic sets recently. There have been some ups and downs for Technic in the last five years; there has been a move from conventional studded beams to studless liftarms which I am personally fine with as long as the functionality in the new models remains unchanged. There are more specialized pieces than before but most of them can be quite useful in many situations. However, both the quality and quantity of new stuff coming out seems to have decreased overall; The Lego people used to have several great things coming out every year, which I don't see so much anymore. The 4x4 off-roader was really nice, but that and the RC buggy have really been the only good things since 1999.

However, it looks like that is about to completely change this year. Has anyone seen the fall 2003 product line (http://www.fbtb.net/ny2003/)? Lots of new stuff coming out this time around, and some of it looks quite impressive. That backhoe in particular is simply incredible; it has ten pneumatic pistons! I'm definitely going to pick up one of those along with that red airport fire truck. The small dumper and front end loader also look nice as does the model team-style pickup.

back to my rocket launcher model for now; I'm almost done with thing, but still need to find a way to mount the decorative fiber optics without having them get in the way while moving the launch platform up and down.

I haven't bought any new lego since 1998.  I'm not really fond of the new stuff - plus i have better things to spend money on, like beer.  Sometimes I think about hauling out my big boxes of lego, but they are full of dust, broken bits, and some rusty motors (as much as they seem waterproof when you first start making lego boats, they wont last long).

Post by: Hunter on May 27, 2003, 05:58:10 am
I haven't bought any lego since about 1995 - But I still have eight small boxes and two large-boxes of the stuff. Most of the pieces I have in "cold storage" so to speak are from my destroyed Star Trek fleets (literally, I built every ship you could possibly conceive of, and threw them, eventually, into a battle on the carpet !). Ofcourse back then I was a mere kid, but given the chance, I'd love to have a LEGO-BATTLEFIELD again. But I could go on for days about my endless lego things - Suffice to say I have enough pieces now to build all the Freespace ships twice over and have enough left for Babylon 5. Pity I don't have enough interest in it anymore.. :(

Well, I built a couple of "test ships" and also some minitures (hehe). Sadly, I have no way to take pictures of them (since they're real bricks and all). But I'll try and find a way soon. I've put together a "Hyperion Mark II", which is based on the Hyperion from Babylon 5 and also a Dominion Cruiser from DS9. Both are about 40 studs in length with fair width, height and detail.  I need to decide what to work on, since I want to put together a mother-of-all ships - But just one, large one. Im confident I can do it with real pieces, the GTVA Colossus :)

Post by: CP5670 on May 29, 2003, 02:30:25 pm
Petrarch, how long did it take you to make that ship? I would like to make computer instructions for some of my models but when I played around with MLCad it took forever to make even simple things. A turntable assembly that I tried building as a test took almost an hour whereas I could build it in five minutes in real life. Just as issue of practice, maybe?
Title: The Freespace Lego Project
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on May 29, 2003, 03:00:39 pm
It did take me quite a while to build the ship, over a few days, but I doubt it took more that two hours overall. Mind you, as you say, it would only take about 20 minutes in real life. The main reason it took so long was the generation of ideas. A lot of the time I was sat thinking, so actualy build time might have been about 90 minutes.

Are you using the latest version of MLCAD? 3.00?
And the latest parts set, even the unofficial ones?

I've also made this. I made the model in RealLife a few months ago, and decided to make it in MLCAD this week, and here it is:

Well, I intend to make it as big as possible, but not so big that it won't fit in a clothe-drawer. ;)

I haven't decided yet - I could use the pieces to build a ton of smaller Cruisers and such, so I'll leave you on a vote.. Also It'd have to be a White-Colossus, since I'm not going to paint the bricks ;)

But once I get a digicam or webcam I'll snap some pictures of my smaller thingies.

I have version 3 but my parts library might be out of date since the program gives fifty or so "such-and-such part not found" errors when I load it up. What files do I need to download from the ldraw site? I basically just want to render a real life lego technic model I have made into an ldraw dat file so no real brainstorming is required this time. :D

Some new stuff for a new story line:

The last ship is an inspiration from a game called "Far Gate" it looked like it had a bunch of missiles up front, and I liked the design, so I built it!

I'm keeping this thread bumped, as I now believe Lego to be one of mankind's greatest inventions, and the competition at PCG has been relaunched, so I will be submitting some sort of Uber-Entry.

I'll find it for you, but I doubt they'll let you enter if you're not a member of the PCGForum.

Here's the site, it's not much of a thing, as it's just a placeholder until the rules of the new compo are drawn up.

Also, there was controversy about me entering an MLCAD model, as the others used real Lego and took photos.
Hence, I was given only a week to work with, whereas the others were given a month.

What are the rules for this PCG competition? Maybe I can submit that technic rocket launcher of mine, which is almost finished now.

On the topic of lego, I picked up a bunch of old space sets off ebay a few weeks ago: (those of you familiar with lego will probably recognize these)

6781 SP-Striker
6896 Celestial Forager
6956 Stellar Recon Voyager
6957 Solar Snooper
6981 Aerial Intruder
6984 Galactic Mediator
6989 Mega Core Magnetizer

All were new/MISB for about $300 total, which is a huge bargain considering how high the prices for these usually go up and I got them in the mail in the last few days. Life is good. :D

By the way that 6781 and the 6887 Allied Avenger would make excellent FS2 fighters IMO.

Well I can't remember the rules of the last one, and this new one will likely have new rules anyway.
Your best bet would be to join the PCGForum, and ask PainLord about it.

Oh, and Cor? Where did you get that part that's along the top of the nose of your Circes Interceptor? I've looked all through MLCAD, and can only find the version with the hinge on one side, which is neither use nor ornament.

Boredom, nothing more.

I found a website that has all the Lego instruction manuals that you could ever want, and I happened across this huge 20" Minifig, so I thought I might as well give it a try.

I spent about an hour and a half just on the head, and there's still the arms, hands and cap to make...

Post by: Labcoatguy on July 09, 2003, 10:03:11 pm
I currently have a vaguely Valkyrie-like contraption being made...I don't have uniformity in color, so the color scheme is quite irregular, and the shape is a bit off, but the general idea of nose and wing-mounted lasers, wraparound missile pack behind the cockpit, and four engines is there. Pics will be up pending improvement or finding my camera, whichever comes first. I would do origami FS, but it looks like my SW origami fleet is the current limit of my imagination, unless something really new comes up.

Here are partially-constructed rear have of the Valkyrie, up to the missile batteries and excluding the wings. I took the general shape from the FSWatch Tech Room.

ah this thread is back again; well, at least it is unusual and interesting.

I think these general shapes would look very nice as FS fighters:
http://www.1000steine.de/users/brickset/images/6887-1.jpg
http://www.1000steine.de/users/brickset/images/6897-1.jpg
http://www.1000steine.de/users/brickset/images/6781-1.jpg

This would make a cool bomber if the cockpit was placed in the middle section:
