Title: What is the best grain?
Post by: Mars on October 08, 2011, 02:33:44 pm
I'd go with wheat, since its probably the most versatile, and I think rice requires more water.

Before anyone asks. . . I was bored.

Your wheat can suck it.  I was born in Louisiana, so a meal isn't a meal without some form of rice.

Speaking as a grain, I feel it is incumbent upon me to support wheat. Bread, Pizza, Waffles, Cake, Flapjacks, Scones, Cookies, various sauces and, of course, Pasta aside, the h2o required for its growth makes it a clear winner over rice, corn loses out due to its monocultural nature and significant topsoil depleting effects - doubly so in light of the instabilities inherent in a recently terraformed environment, Oats are insufficiently flexible, and barley should be brought along as a small-scale secondary crop, primarily for use in 'recreational beverages'.

corn is rather versatile. aside from being useful for food, you can make oil from it, you can make sugar from it, alcohol for consumption/fuel. very useful plant. wheat is good for consumption. rice is good but the farming of it requires a lot of water and labor, i wouldnt take it to mars. wheat is good in terms of dietary requirements and has many culinary uses. really i think corn is what id take, just on the grounds of how versatile it is. i very much doubt they would send you with only one crop though. part of it would be an experiment to determine which crops would survive best in the martian soil, so a large number of different species of seeds would be taken.

Corn is pretty crappy nutritionally though.

Ah who cares, we're only sending the people off to Mars to die anyways. I say keep all of the food for us still loyal to earth and let those martians figure it out for themselves.

Corn is the easiest to genetically manipulate into different varieties (with diverse growth and nutritional characteristics) through artificial selection, which is why it got my vote.

...and then the martian colonists create Gundams to destroy the earth...  After Colony 195...

Quinoa is pretty nutritious, if you consider it a grain.

Clearly wheat. And the best booze is made from sugar cane anyway.

Wheat. There is no competing with fresh-baked bread. And none of that corn bread business.

Wheat for bread and pasta dishes! You'd have to take potatoes too, for consumption and for making Vodka!

Rye! Because no beloved rye bread without it in good ol' Germany.
And you can also create (some sickening) booze out of it, of course!
