Title: Red Faction series on sale today on Steam
Post by: Mongoose on October 12, 2011, 02:43:08 pm
Steam's been having one of their week-long publisher sales for THQ's titles, and today is the Red Faction series' turn.  The first two games are going for $2.50 each, while Guerrilla is going for $5.  Since I don't own any of the games, and they're one of :v:'s babies, I might be interested in picking them up.  Are there particular games that I should go for/stay away from?  I know 2 doesn't seem to have a very good Metacritic score.

I've never really understood the hate-on for 2.

Then again, I played 2 before 1, so....

Well, if I'm planning on getting the first one and Guerrilla, I don't see any reason not to throw 2 in there for the hell of it. :p

I think I'll only be getting Guerilla. I absolutely loved the demo and the open world.

Edit: I allotted myself $100 for Steam games... I've almost burned through half of it. At least I haven't bought any expensive new games.

RF2 is fine. Nothing remarkable, but fine. Worth $2.50 at least.

Eh I'm thinking about getting Armegeddon...   I know it didn't score well and it felt like not much more than "let's blow stuff up"
but it has that Descent level in there...

Guerrilla I felt was too open... errand running. they made a destruction engine, forgot the game maybe?

R1 was... ok. Ugly and short and not much of a story...

R2.. can't remember much of it.

I really liked Guerrilla (you can skip most of the errand missions) because it felt like GTA: Mars.

Armageddon has some issues (nonsensical plot for one, not being Guerrilla the other :p ) but has very fun weapons and vehicle segments.

Just don't think about the plot, at all.

Oh man, I totally forgot about that Descent level in Armageddon.  Not that it'll run on my system anyway, but maybe eventually.

God knows how many years ago, I was in a game store. On the shelf, I saw two Gamecube games. Rogue Squadron 2, and Red Faction 2. I'd played Rogue Squadron 2 before, and ****ing loved it, but I did not yet own it. I had never seen Red Faction 2 before, but had fond memories of playing the first Red Faction on my mate's PS2. As I was merely a young teen, and Australia had a penchant for charging $100 for a game, I had only enough money for one.

I chose Red Faction 2.

One of the worst decisions of my life.

**** RED FACTION 2.

I say we grab RFA... then snag the meshes and effects from it.

THQ-time travel-ception

On another note I think it'd be wise to read the Steam forums.... There's a lot of problems with RFG due to the DRM.
RFA has no such problems and has 16 co-op maps with 2 modes of play.

The DLC adds 4 maps/missions, an orbital strike, a tank, and some other stuff.

So yeah I bought RFA... down with DRM!

RFG has always had serious problems running with DRM off consoles. I'm still getting got it anyways...

I suggest you wait a few years to buy. By that time not only will the price be even lower it'll probably run on any new system you might have at the time.

The Descent level sooooo has me craving a new Descent with modern graphics and physics...

It was like telling me I can have my cake...  but the part I was allowed to eat was tiny :(

I thought the particle effects were awesome.  Napalm laser and convergence laser > all.

The game is unbelievably crashy on Win XP though. I've gotten corrupted split save files that wiped my abilities and scrap,
even broke some of co-op on me.  I swapped it to the DX10/11 version on 7 and it's only died 1 time so far.

Descent with Geomod. Now THERE's something you'd have to watch out for
"I'm just going to shoot these missiles over here and OH WAIT tunnel collapsed..."

Indeed, a new Descent with Geomod, updated graphics and the same awesome feel could be an amazing game.
BTW, I wonder why nobody seems to rip off Descent, while other FPSes of tha time (like Doom or Quake) are heavily imitated. I haven't seen any 6DOF FPS newer than D3 (not counting some obscure multiplayer game).

Well Miner Wars.... which I found extremely blah last time I tried the alpha. Maybe it will get better before release /shrugs.

I'm gonna see if I can't rip the Descent HUD out of RFA... no promises though. Friggen game crashes XP like it's getting paid to do it.

Link will go dead in a few days on it's own so, get while it's hot.

Nuke would have a field day with RFA... just about everything hud, menu, or weapons wise is all done via commented out LUA.
