No, I'm not kidding.
Especially lavender. I think lavender would look ok.
I guess I've seen it so often in anime that it doesn't really look wrong to me. Pink does, even though I've seen that a lot in anime. It looks bad IRL.
I've never seen purple/lavender irl but I don't think it would look bad. I looked it up on google and it does but all those people look like sluts/goth/emo/camwhores. And you can tell it's dyed. And their faces are all ugly anyway.
Would it look normal/ok if someone was genetically born with lavender/purple as their natural color or is there no way possible for different hair colors than what we have now to look ok irl?
-
It would look very strange, because purple is on the opposite side of the spectrum of all the other hair colors.

So....... why does it work in anime?
-
Because you are already desensitised.
Hell, green on certain animation styles can work well also. Just don't count on the transition to real-life to work as planned.
-
One thing I've noticed is that IRL, the color is always flat, and in anime, it usually only looks good when there is more depth to it. (eg lighter parts and darker parts)
And that happens even when people dye their hair to natural colors (eg dyed brown, blonde, etc.)
-
So....... why does it work in anime?
because your brain interprets it as black.
keep in mind, in Anime taking a smaller robot and forcibly mashing it into the top of your giant robot to gain a crazy power-up works. Even when there is absotultly no reason to suspect it should in universe.

If it looks good, it will be because it looks weird, not in spite of it.

C-C-C-C-COMBINE?!

Natural hair color isn't spectral like in anime though. That's half the reason why anime hair is so weird.
the other half are those goddamn yami spikes (http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2010/1/22/129086451395741042.jpg)

Depends..
1/100000 weird
1/100 not so much
1/10 nothing special

Honestly I have seen pink, purple, and green hair on people before....
...and I think teal hair can be attractive on a flesh and blood female. Purple... eh... Pink... not really...
-
If someone's natural hair colour was purple, there would be quite a few people with purple as their natural colour, and since it was commonplace, it would not be weird.

I think what he is asking is if it could look good In our current population, not so much "what if purple hair was natural" but "all the dye jobs are crap, can it look good if done right?" To answer this question, yes, it can. Try GIMPing a pic of a friend to it, it works.
-
Pink actually can look surprisingly good if its done right (not oversaturated or too bright, faded, with proper "reflectiveness" and...tone variation, cause uniform color dye jobs look supar fake)
Actually, I think most colors would work like that...

Yeah. Why is it that dyed hair usually isn't reflective anyway?
-
Probably cause it's just dye... not a conditioner or it doesn't include some sort of oil base to be shiny.
Plus you're thinking about anime characters, who don't have to deal with real sunlight, backlighting, shadows, fading, translucency, etc.
Real people hair just doesn't have the volume (ie solid blocks in some cases) or the stiffness (weird single hairs unique to certain characters) to pull it off normally.
There are wigs, and a whole heck of a lot of hair spray / gel to keep it up. Cosplay.com has "some" good examples where they really put effort into making it look good.
