Title: Has anyone ever created deck plans of the FreeSpace ships?
Post by: fantomx11 on October 26, 2011, 07:31:47 am
I'd like to see what people have done for the inside of the ships, if anything has. If not, then I was wondering where I could get me some side and top views of them and I could make my own.

I recall some hangar bays where posted a while back in FSU or modding boards, go check out there for awesome screenshots.

I believe it was Mjn.Mixael and I think there was some discussion on if the bastion's bay would fit within the proportions of the ship as a result when he did a scale mock up of the perspective for the recreated render

Water worked out the hangar for an Orion while he was working on a Bastion mainhall remake. It's on the modding board somewhere. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71255.msg1409440#msg1409440)

My remake is simply of what you can see in the original Bastion mainhall, where as Water's is much more in depth.

Considering the raw size of the ships this would be an incredibly huge undertaking, and there's really no need for it.

Since when has the "need" entered the equation?

We don't "need" freespace at all ;)

Draw the outline of the ship and then put like a little tiny box inside it and say 'crew here' and then post it and

When I wrote that sentence, I knew immediately someone would reply just like you did... :)

Damnation, somebody remembered I came up with that concept.

A Fenris occupies greater volume than a Nimitz by like two or three times. It is entirely possible to spend years aboard a carrier and not see all of the ship. You could take a week just visiting every compartment for a couple minutes.

Dunno about you, but unless there's something that really, really demands deck plans to make it work, I can think of easier ways to go insane. Greebling a borg cube, perhaps.

I think lots of people came up with that concept

I have a half-topic question:

Would it look awkward if all fighters / bombers would have the actual size compared to a 253m long cruiser like the Fenris?
It always bothered me that the capital ships were too small or the fighters/bombers too large in-game (why is it like this in the first place?)

I everything would be sized in comparison to each other there would be no problem for a Fenris to have a decent fighter-bay.

I think they are all actual size, except that the pilots on the HTL models are often way out of scale.

Well, the Dragon has about the same size as a modern-day jet fighter (slightly shorter and wider than the F-16), and we all know what an easy target that one is. That's not just because it's running circles around you :P Honestly, I'm glad the targets are that big. And if you need to fit some 120 of them in a destroyer, I can see it start 'making sense' (as far as that's applicable in FS) that the spaceships are that large...

I won't tell anyone how they should get insane if you get my drift...... I'm an architect, I am fully aware of the general issues involved in this little conversation of ours btw.

All fighters with supersmall cockpits then?

Yes, the fighters are huge, the people are tiny

Considering the raw size of the ships this would be an incredibly huge undertaking, and there's really no need for it.

That depends on your goal. The reason I would like deck plans is because I'm planning a tabletop rpg for my group. Since they would be playing marines instead of pilots, deck plans would be handy.

Specifically, I would want pre-Great War deck plans, and I would be more than happy to do what I need myself, if I knew where to get top views and side views of them.

You would need deck plans in order to do a FS fps, which could be pretty freaking sweet.  I guess that project over at Game Warden is stalled out, but you could try asking if they had anything.  Mmmm, NTF boarding action...

As was mentioned a while ago, there is a project building a Fenris in Minecraft. It even has a thread, the relevant part starts about here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76953.msg1551937#msg1551937). Not much in the way of a real floorplan is done yet, but the project is moving quickly.

I agree, but that's quite a bit out of the scope of my project.

Yes
That is all I have to say to that. Now I'm wondering if it's possible mod wise for an already existing game to do this...

This is the only attempt I'm aware of, using the source engine, but it doesn't look like they got very far:

http://www.game-warden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=93

Even with a very limited scope (1 character model, couple of weapons, 1 map), I imagine it would be a rather difficult mod to pull off.  Anyway, I only mentioned it because their team might have designed some type of ship interior setting, though they might not have been thinking in that direction at all, dunno.

It's not Freespace (but may as well be a Love Letter to Freespace).

Well, no true deck plans, but that game meshes Space and Infantry/Boarding actions perfectly. Used to be a blast, but dunno if people still play.

Are you kidding me? I'm in agreement that the fighters are huge but look at the people in the photo in comparison to the Ursa's cockpit. Either they need a rec room to putz around in while jumping to location, or the Ursa has  crew of like, 6 or 7, which we know isn't the case. The cockpits themselves are out of scale.

I thought it was a given that the Ursa has a minibar in back.

Images like that are a simple matter with any 3D app and Photoshop equivalent.
