Title: GVF Auletes
Post by: MarkN on November 07, 2011, 02:15:18 pm
Another new Zod fighter. The basic shape is complete but it needs some more details, especially on the lower sides of the engines and the central pod.

My idea of how this would be used is that it is a fast tough fighter, but it is large and so is unmanoeuvrable and an easy target

Nice! Quite Zod-like.

It's awesome!

What are you doing for the cockpit section? An offset cockpit as seen in the Horus would look quite cool on this one...

The dorsal scoop-spoiler actually looks quite a lot like the Horus, though this one sweeps up and away, while the Horus curves down to the edge.

Now with some asymmetry, as well as a full set of missile tubes.

What do I need to do for modeled thrusters? I don't think the standard thrusters will cope the the extremely long and thin engines this has.

:X

...I believe curvy missile tubes do not make sense unless your ship shoots magic homing blobs of energy. Even in a mod where such things exist (such as Stellar Assault), the launchers are linear as the "missiles" need to get accelerated to a high velocity. That said, right now all those look like are backwards exhaust manifolds.

If I would make a design suggestion, refer to this rough sketch as seen here:

In this concept, the canopy does quite resemble the Horus', but then, I like the Horus' canopy. It is moved forward, and has a good length to it. Aft the canopy, symmetrically mounted in the open space, there is a second "carapace" ridge inside the main ridge, if you will. Opposite to the canopy is a sensor suite. Missile launchers have been moved to aerodynamic blisters on the sides of the forward hull.

I think this has great potential to be one of the best Vasudan designs, if the table matches its looks...   ...The speed and agility of a Horus, with the power and durability of a heavy assault fighter. Along with that long, powerful shape, it will fill a hole in the Vasudan order of battle which... has always existed, really. Good luck, and I hope you like the suggestion.

:D

Your 'Rough sketch' is way better than any of my concept art. I will try out that idea, but knowing the way I work it will come out completely different.

I really like this design, looking forward to how it progresses further!

Mark,
Maybe you were born as a Vasudan shipdesigner. Looks pretty good. The gunpoints are well chosen.

Latest status, with a rebuild of the wings, and a full set of weapons. The central guns are now on the sides of the head, while the wings carry the central missile bank:

Cool, cool.

You still gotta come up with something better for the top front surfaces of those pods, though.

I actually like the top surface of the pods... Very Serapis-like.

The cockpit looks great, by the way. :D

Top front surfaces. The flat planes.

If you are attempting to point out a design aspect which is not immediately understood, you must do one of two things, or both:

(a.) Use a picture, and then use the picture to express your idea.

(b.) Use more descriptive terminology.

That is all.

Aardwolf:
Do you mean the area immediately in front of the first crescent, or the sloped surface?

The sloped surface has two rows of missile tubes on it, and modelled missile tubes don't go well with the Serapis-style partially exposed tubes.

@Thaeris:
My name for...

Your name for...
What I was talking about:
top front
top front
What you were talking about:
top
top

I can only interpret that as you failing to read what I wrote.

MarkN gets what I'm talking about.

The sloped surface has two rows of missile tubes on it, and modelled missile tubes don't go well with the Serapis-style partially exposed tubes.

What about raised rings, like what the Perseus' normal map has?

Again, I am the least qualified person to ask for status updates, but have you had the time to continue working on this nifty fighter?

I hope he's working on this still, the Zods need more fighters

this model sure would be worth it from what we can see right now
