Title: Dear GOP; Please pick this guy...
Post by: MP-Ryan on November 10, 2011, 11:52:03 am
...it'll be worth it for the humour alone.  We all know that if you do get a candidate elected they're just going to **** things up even more, so pick an unelectable entertainer and call it a day.

Too bad that the ability to remember one's own talking points is not a trait selected for in politicians...

I'm not sure, but I think he's attempting to communicate in the "English" language here.

There are a few ESL Europeans on HLP that could give Republicans lessons on how to speak and write in the English language.  Then again, Perry is probably one of those sad individuals of the belief that they speak "American."

Well there is a difference between "American English" and "UK English", though too often, like you imply, it is used as a cover for ignorance of linguistic rules; such as the incredible display of abject silliness shown above.

If it's him or Herman "Koch brothers' brother from another mother" Cain, I'll be happy. Sadly, they'll probably come to (what passes for) their senses and settle on Romney.

I like how his last line in that vid is 'oops', I lost it there, like I've been saying for months now this guy is a gift from God to the democrats, they could put up a Hitler/Stalin ticket and still win.

I'm starting to think the entire Republican lineup was handpicked by Comedy Central.

I speak American English (laced with some USMC and USAF slang and occasionally lapsing into TropeSpeak), and it annoys my sister to no end, because she speaks British English and just can't stand the way Americans pronounce certain words.
On the other hand, both of us care about proper grammar, and I've sometimes even corrected native English speakers. While there's an opinion (mostly in Britain, from what I've gathered) that Americans don't care about grammar, in reality, the rules are only slightly more lax. No excuse for Illiteracy Communists like this guy.
Funny thing is, because I've learned English mostly by using it, while she is learning it in school, I'm better at conversation and "daily" English usage, while she is better at exams.

I think that the impression that Americans don't care about grammar comes from our version of the language being a lot less formal than the British one. My friend related to me how America's tongue is descended from what was known as the commoner's tongue around the 1700s, and since it was mainly poorer people that originally colonized the country, that went with them, whereas the more "British" accent as we know it today was popularized in England and filtered through the populace that was closer to London.

While I was overseas in England I actually helped out several friends who were from non-English speaking countries (Germany, Turkey, Italy), with their conversational English. I got to see some good examples of the differences between what was taught in a classroom and what was actually used "on the street". :)

Wow. I cannot believe this guy was a C-130 pilot. I'd hate to think about what he was like in a military cockpit.

"So before-landing: fuel, undercarriage, and...um...um...there's three right? No, five?! And the m is for...maths, right?"

Remember folks, we had a president who talked this way for 8 YEARS (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/bushisms/2000/03/the_complete_bushisms.single.html)

EDIT: Oh, let's not forget the everlasting Quayle-isms (http://www.rantnroll.com/html/quayle.html) from one of our former vice presidents.

That's a good point.  When the electorate is largely composed of simpering morons, a candidate behaving like an idiot just makes him seem relatable.

I'm still of the opinion that morons get voted into the position because large sections of the electorate don't trust anyone smarter than they are. :p

I think it's more that the only candidates who come to state/national prominence are themselves morons.  That probably says a lot about the state of mind of anyone who desires the job title of "politician." :p

That only shifts the question to why anyone would elect a moron to those jobs. :p

I saw that, I thought that was hilarious; from the first words he said all I heard was "Crap crap crap what?". He started shifting around and it looked like he was trying to pass it off as some sort of dramatic thinking lol.

Sadly the damage it would cause to elect someone as, unrefined as Rick Perry would be a price too high for the original fun of having such a stumbling leader. Sadly we'll have to take the GOP and the presidential elections a little more serious because of the ultimate effect that could be caused by a bad president will affect the whole world.

I'm going to have to stick with Ron Paul, even if you disagree with some of his points, at least he won't enforce those from the federal level, meaning your state won't be forced to do something. Nonetheless for real political advise I'm not the right person, obviously. ;)

By the way, here's Herman Cain with a similar 'oops' moment:

Perhaps he was just really tired from tons of interviews, I can imagine that..

The weakness the GOP keeps showing in front-line candidates in foreign policy is terrifying.  What's hilarious is that, for all his other strange ideas, Ron Paul is probably the strongest Republican in the Presidential run on foreign policy issues.

It's a strange world we live in when someone with as little knowledge as Cain can be considered a viable candidate to eventually run what remains the militarily most powerful country on the planet.

TBH I think the populace is looking for the candidate that stands the best chance of fixing the economy first and foremost, foreign policy isn't really the priority.  As a wise, squinty eyed man once said, "Its the economy stupid!"

I'm personally of the opinion that anyone who volunteers to run for public office should be immediately banned from doing so.

Hmm. . . public office drafting. . . didn't one of the Greek city-states do that?

I'm of the opinion that we should just write an open source "America Sim 2011" and just pressgang whoever gets the highest score on it. :p

You mean like the guy who has "beaten" Sim City 3000 (http://www.break.com/game-trailers/game/splinter-cell-conviction/sim-city-with-population-of-six-million-people)?

But whose inhabitants won't live past age 50? Because it wasn't efficient?

You may definitely be right. The example made earlier about SimCity 3000 is definitely interesting though, as I've played that game for a long time as well. Too bad the maximum is based on game-set rules and limitations rather than the real deal.

Let's also make sure they manage some intelligence and economical tests before they're allowed to run ;)
