Greetings all:
I just picked up a (used) copy of FS2 last week via eBay. No documentation was included, unfortunately -- just the three disks -- but lucky for me the in-game tutorials are awesome. I've been dying to play this game since '99, and now I'm finally behind the controls and making short work of those Shivan bastards!
Anyway, my question has to be with FS2 cheat codes. The FS2 cheat code lists I've seen indicate that you must type "www.freespace2.com" in mission first before any cheats can be enabled. Umm... what? How does that work? When I try typing in "www..." nothing happens at all.
As much as I hate looking stupid, I am eager to get a few of these cheats going and elevate the carnage level a notch or two.
If anyone could please take pity on the clueless, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks,
Malleus

:D:wink::)WELCOME TO THE HLPBB!:):wink::D
Cheats... :sigh: :p (actually, if they're used for fun, they might be fine)
But typing www.freespace2.com and then the cheat code should work. :)
And if I remember correctly, it doesn't tell you that cheats are enabled, but I'm not sure about that one.
Edit: Also, how do you new members find HLP these days, without VBB? I just want to know... :)
-
vwBB referals probably, thats how i got here. As for the cheats, eh, i've been forced to use them for certain debugging tests but you type the www.freespace2.com in-mission, then at the top left, the words "Cheats Enabled" should appear. After that, you just enter the cheat...using these means you wont be able to continue to the next mission however. Have fun, and welcome to HLP; exits are located to the right and back, in the case of an emergency shotguns are placed under the seats; stay out of the ventalation ducts and should you wander into them, beware a five legged creature with red eyes.

LOL! Okay, guys -- thanks for the info (and the welcome). Maybe I just didn't notice the "cheats enabled" message up in the corner there, but I'll watch for it next time. I guess I'm just used to console games, where "CHEAT ENABLED" is typically blazoned across the screen in huge letters in case we didn't get the point.
Thanks also for the tip about not being able to continue to the next mission if cheats are used. The cheat lists usually contain this little -- and important! -- caveat at the very beginning.
The only other FS2 forum I've visited so far is the one over at VolitionWatch.com. I feel a bit out of place in any of these forums, though, because it seems like everyone here is familiar with source code debugging, FRED2 and MODing and all that tech-savvy stuff. Me, I basically fell ass-backwards into a sysadmin job about eight years ago where I had to learn OpenVMS -- but that's about the extent of my technology skill. I had a look at FRED2 and almost went coo-coo trying to figure it out.
-
Don't worry, you'll learn :)
-
Ya, Skippy is right... When i came here, I knew nothing more exept how to take a dump... Now i can already do some stuff :D I AM SO HAPPY!
-
As far as Fred2 goes, theres a nice little tutorial under data/freddocs
We all started off a bit clueless, you'll learn.

:nervous: Not me... only FRED2, and table modding. I know nothing about source, and MODding other than tables... :shaking:

FRED2 is very easy to learn. Once you`ve done the walkthough that narol mentioned you`ll be able to write your own missions (Seriously. It's that good!).
Even if you don`t want to make your own missions there is plenty to do. People are always asking for play testers and there are a large number of missions and campaigns available on the VolitionWatch Archive.

Why do newbies always refer to their questions as dumb?
That's one of the reasons we have forums. To answer questions

Thats a good question, sure someone like Kellan (example) asking
why none of his ships are firing their beams would be a dummer question, but i suppose your just embareced when u are a newbie.
Arriving at HLP is a bit daunting, i know becuase iv'e only been here a month and a half, and i wasnt on the VBB ( :( )much longer before that. Looking at people who's post count are in the thousands makes you feel a bit small, but after about 20 post you settle in.
I have a confesion.
i've never been able to get the cheats to work either
But when you know how to work FRED, you don't need cheats. ;7
Seriously, do the walkthrough, it only teaches you how to do one mission, but from that you can work out the SEXP's (FRED Code) you dont use in it.

Greetings, Mortal. Welcome to HLP. I shall be your historian for the evening.
(Okay, this is just a pimp for the Port. If you haven't played the original Freespace, follow my avatar and get it!
<----- It will clear up a whole lot about the Freespace 2 story.)
:thepimp: Be warned! It is a mod, but there is no installation involved, just one file.

Actually you can move on if you use cheats in FS2. I know in FS1 you couldn't, but it does work in 2.
also, if you use the always have full weapon energy and missles cheat, then that cheat will carry over from mission to mission without you having to retype the cheats in.
