Title: Nitronic Rush - Racing has never been this awesome
Post by: Alex Heartnet on November 17, 2011, 10:58:50 pm
I recently stumbled upon a completely awesome freeware racing game.
http://nitronic-rush.com/
It describes itself as a 'survival racing game' - you have to drive through tracks filled with all kinds of crazy things from jumps to chainsaws.
You can also do all kinds of crazy stunts in mid-air.
Oh, and your car has thrusters on all sides, and it can fly and do barrel rolls.
It's almost like a cross between Wipeout and Rush 2049

The game recommends using an Xbox 360 controller, but me being the stubborn PC gamer that I am, I just use the keyboard - which works suprisingly well.

All in all, found it to be a very good game for a freeware title. It looks good, plays well, though the handling is a little too analogue, but considering the obvious Tron references, that shouldn't be surprising. The campaign is pretty easy, but the challenge levels are very tough to make up for it :)

The campaign has to be easy, for the sake of those who haven't been playing racing games all their life.  For a while the campaign was just the right difficulty for me - although I tend to quickly become good at any given game that I haven't played before, and now I can conquer the hardcore levels without too much problems.

While many of the challenge levels are pretty cool, on some of them it is not clear where the the actual end of the level is once you get near the end (I'm looking at you, Volcano).

This is what's been missing from racing games. Barring Trackmania, there hasn't been a huge focus of late on the crazy kind of fun that you got from things like Rollcage (I want a new rollcage), so this is a welcome blast of fresh air.

Hope to see these guys go on to do more, they're clearly damn talented.
