I'm trying to develop my painting skills with a tablet. So this month I started making images at a leisurely pace. I've decided to post the results here so that I have a reason to keep making more.
In chronological order:
A view of my tearful farewell at the airport
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/ByeNow.jpg)
A woman with a lion, on a train.
A couple of mechanics and an x-wing
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/X-wing.jpg)
A bison in the winter (sourced from a photograph from the Natural Unseen Hazards Blog. I don't know where they got it)
And finally some sort of space battle between a Dreadnaught class cruiser and a Strike class cruiser.
-
Looks nice. :D
-
We've gotta get the X-wing and the battle into FotG. Keep it up!
-
I like the X-wing one, has this WWII vibe. Is there a source for it, or did you draw it yourself?
-
Wow, I really like this style.
-
Yup. I made a render using an x-wing and some pictures of myself.

It was a dry Christmas art-wise. I got a bit done, and then I got Starcraft 2 ;). I only just got started again today with the picture of the rock trucks.
Chronological order:
Nude on a couch
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/NudeOnCouch.jpg)
Winter in the river valley
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/WinterPath.jpg)
Some rock trucks at work
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/RockTruck.jpg)

Your skills are rather commendable. It's not often one comes across this particular style (it's been a few years since my last art class, so I can't remember it's name) and especially one that's done well.
Also.....
INB4 OMFG BOOBIES

INB4 OMFG BOOBIES
She was watching Community, and I had to draw her. I directed her pose, obviously. Nobody watches tv like that. :)
As for the style, I have no idea. I always like Manet. He had some nice light in his paintings, so maybe I'm drawing some inspiration from him.
-
Some work from the past week. I'm trying to put together a portfolio/ build some skills, but it'd very tempting to just do nothing. I get to work in the morning and and can't choose between reading a book, playing SC2, fiddling around with various 3d programs, drawing, doing nothing listening to music, watching a movie. Somehow drawing seems to filter down to the bottom. So anyways:
This is a concept for something I want to make, possibly my first foray into zbrush. His heads not small, the armour is just big. It was inspired by marines from warhammer and starcraft both. Their bodies couldn't possibly wear that armour without being seriously deformed (ie widely spaced arms, legs that are really long) So I figured, hey, why not just stick the wearer in the torso. The final effect is rather bizarre, which is nice.
And this one is just from a blurry photo I took. The lighting was cool, so I drew it.

-
Now that you mention it, space marines are freaky.
-
Your style reminds me a lot of Kimmo Lemetti's (http://www.blastwave-comic.com/index.php?p=comic&nro=3) work.
...I bet you're him. D:

Nope

So here's some more work from this month. Went to a couple model sessions, and picked the best from them.
First session, done with a sharpie:

The session I went to today, done in Photoshop:

What's with all the nekkid folk?
-
Apparently that's what people liked to look at before computer screens.

People still like looking at naked people :) A lot of those old masters' paintings were just softcore pornography dressed up as classical mythology. After a while it just became the quintessential artistic activity. Plus, model sessions are cheaper than going to a movie.

Not much to show lately
Some sort of alien:
An Air Cadet
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/Locas.jpg)

An old model of mine, in its berth:

... or perhaps "birth" would be more appropriate.

Good pun :)
I think a ship of its nature would have to be grown, rather than manufactured, in the shipyard.
Here are some fighters in their separate hangar.

Is that....the Notus?
-
When I gazed upon this picture for the first time, one phrase ran through my mind. One thing that completely overrode all other thoughts.
That thought was...
TAKE OFF EVERY ZIG
But yeah, love 'em and love your style.
-
FireSpawn, please have a cookie.
:D
-
Is that....the Notus?
Looks like it. :D
-
Is that....the Notus?
Yup, those are Notus(es?) The older version anyways. Here's a shot of the newer version, as well as the Boreas (which made an appearance on these forums once upon a time, I think).
And a couple Photoshop portraits to keep with the theme:

The guy looks like he wants to murder me...

Gordon Freeman: The college years

Gordon Freeman: The college years
This will forever be the unofficial title of that painting now.
:p
-
Love the Notus, and I remember the Boreas. The colors were different than what I remembered. Awesome stuff!
-
Thanks! The Boreas has actually gone through three different meshes. I think it was one of the first models I ever made, and it was pretty messy. I figured while I was changing the geometry I could address the colours so that there's a bit more variation.
-
Love the photo-like focus in the house one as your eye moves towards the porch, that's really cool to see in this style. Was that present in a photo you were working from or did you add it in as you painted?
-
It was added. I figured the front of the house is where the personality is, so I spent a bit more time on it. I increased the contrast on that portion after the fact, as well.
-
Wow, it's been a while since I added anything to this thread. I've decided to do some painting this summer, so hopefully by the end of the summer I'll have some new, better stuff to show.
A goldfish:
The name says it all:
Winter in Peace River:
-
And here are the first two paintings of the summer. They're studies of Tom Thomson's work. He was very good with colour, and hopefully I'll learn a thing or two from him.
First study:
Second study:

-
I actually kind of like the second one. Reminds me of our summer cottage when I was a kid. The scenery was similiar.
It also has depth in it.
-
That birthday goldfish is super awesome.

I think it's based off a painting of Algonquin provincial park, which I gather is quite a nice area.
That birthday goldfish is super awesome.
I had decided that from here on in I would paint birthday cards for all my friends. I did one and then that was the end of it.
-
Nice work.
I would recommend watercolors in addition to digital work, as watercolors are much more finicky, but are surprisingly a good learning to for the patient XD.
-
Water colours are a good suggestion, AtomicClucker. I tried them a couple times in the past, and the results were awful. It would be really good for learning how to be economical with my mark making. Might have to dig some up.
In the meantime, I tried to sacrilegiously combine Tom Thomson's style with modern industry. I think I'm going to have to return to the studies, because I didn't do a very good job of painting a SAGD facility, or using his style. :(
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc433/bobbtmann/Various/Firebag_zpse25764c3.jpg)
Returned to my comfort zone for the next one. I was experimenting with a script I wrote in Javascript to increase the amount of variation in my colours. I also tried applying some of the lessons from the Tom Thomson studies, namely how background seemed to be painted over the foreground:
-
Are these digital scans?
-
No, these were all done in photoshop.
-
A little bump. Did a portrait of a housemate. Turned out okay, I guess. A bit off. The coloration of his face is a bit boring. The shadows aren't very saturated, and just turned sort of grey.
The pronghorn is just a study, for a possible public art project.
And finally, I'm trying to learn how to draw people. This isn't the first attempt, and there's still a long way to go.
Hopefully, with a bit more practice, I'll be able to render out decent looking characters for concepts and whatnot. It's a pretty severe handicap if I need a model every time I draw a person.
-
There are loads of youtube channels like sycra and Scott Robertson which can help to get the basics of rendering. Or even simplistic perspective and proportion down.
-
That sounds like a good idea. I think the biggest thing is practice, though. I usually think to myself: I should draw today.
And then I don't.
-
There's a tremendous variety in these pictures. In general, I like them.
-
I usually think to myself: I should draw today.
And then I don't.
This.
Blights my aspirations too.
-
Despite my previous comments about focusing on drawing people, the next set are either animal studies from images pulled from the internet, or a made up creature for the last one.
Some more pronghorns:
A black bear:
and some kind of dinosaur/wolf hybrid:
I like the last one, but in hindsight I should have considered the silhouette a bit more. I think it was partially inspired by the Ohju in Kemono no Souja Erin.
-
That last one looks more like a cross between a wolf and a chicken to me. :)
But I like it and I can see what you're going for. Maybe it's a wolf/chicken/dinosaur hybrid... :)
-
That's true, I guess chickens do have the same kind of legs, with the feathers ending halfway down. Though I don't mind, since chickens look pretty cool.
-
I was thinking fox, but I guess that's just because of the color.
-

All right. It's a fox/chicken hybrid, rather than a wolf/dinosaur hybrid. :)
I'm sure a fox/chicken is a more meaningful hybrid, anyways.

The poor thing would be all confused, trying to eat itself... :)

My Afghanistan rescue dog met the grand in laws yesterday. The cousins too, and their kids. Young kids aged three'ish. On his maiden walk in Stowmarket he proceeded to wing an escaping woodpigeon and disembowel it in front of said children.
Proud doggy daddy indeed I am.

Lovely. :)
