Title: The Great Pile Of Steam
Post by: BloodEagle on December 23, 2011, 06:26:48 pm
Kind of surprised no one else has posted this....

http://store.steampowered.com/holidaysale/details

So, basically Valve is doing this thing where you complete achievements (maximum 6 per day), and for each achievement you get a 'gift'.  A gift can be: A game, a coupon, or a lump of coal, and they can be freely traded with other users.  Now one (1) of these achievements, every day, is free, in that you don't have to have a pay-for game to earn it (brilliantly fiendish of Valve, btw).  Although, all I've gotten from those so far, is coal.

Seven (7) units of coal can be turned into another gift, or you can use each lump of coal as an entry into a lottery/giveaway (note: you must have ten (10) items in your wishlist to qualify for the giveaway) for fabulous prizes.

I made this so that we can list what we have and what we would be willing to trade, and then do so.

1 coal, 50% off valve coupon.  i'm not going to be buying any games to do this, and probably not even bothering with any of the free ones.

2 coal and a 50% any valve title.

I have a 50% off Universe Sandbox, and I already have that game so it's up for gifting. And I have a 25% off Valve title, but I already have all the ones I want, so that's up for gifting too. I'll take any coal though, I'm going for that drawing.
Post reply and Steam name, or PM me on Steam. I'm Scourge in the HLP group.

I'll trade you 2 coal for 2 coal. Can we do that?

I'd ask if you were joking, but there is that goal today for doing any trade.

You can do goals after the day they're up.  Get something decent to trade, and you can still get the goal.

I've got one coal, one 25% off of Stronghold (OH BOY), and one 25% off Valve products. I had 50% off for Arkham City, but I gave that to a friend as a Christmas Gift

2 bits of coal, a 50% valve coupon, a 50% Hitman Collection coupon, and a 50% AlienBreed3 coupon. I'd probably like to swap the last two for something strategy/simish

Got 33% Valve coupon. Can be traded for nothing, so it's free to get.

Edit: The coupon is gone, but one coal came in. Same conditions.

Saint's Row 2, Halflife 1, some Reckless Disregard for Gravity game, and a lump of coal.

I'm not entirely sure how I ended up getting these, though I gather SPESS MAHREEN may have helped.

4 Coal, Free Copy of Portal, 50% off a Valve title, 50% off GTA Vice City and 50% off any CyanWorlds titles. Willing to trade the copy of portal and the coupons for... anything really.

some Reckless Disregard for Gravity game
That's a pretty fun game, from everything I've heard.

I have a 25% off Valve and 50% off a game called Eufloria, if anyone's interested.  I'm keeping the coal for myself, because chances at awesome raffle.  I am accepting the generosity of any free games I don't have, though. :p

I nominate NGTM-1R for the Lucky SOB award, this year.

And now I'm off to download a 5GB Crime MMO so that I can grind to level 8 so that I can get another lump of coal.

It seems all the free games are MMOs
Which sucks

Why do I want to rely on some group of people to get through a level I could very well do on my own? I don't need their lack of coordination! This isn't WoW!
Ah well, I accessed my inventory one day only to find out I got Half Life. I'm happy with just that really

Back to figuring out how to pelt someone with a snowball in Lockdown

Easily.  Grab snowball, click Attack in direction of opponent, profit.

You have to get the snow level.  It only took me three tries, so I was kind of lucky.

Just right click on the snowballs on the ground, and then right click to throw them.

Well, not so much figuring out as just trying to get sufficient funds

EDIT: Well that was easier than expected
Three matches it took. Got coal...

But hey, Spiral Knights is actually pretty damned fun

Had no time to really play on Steam, also cause it loves to rape my limited bandwidth i'm currently under by updating the bazillion games I have on it. Offline mode for me when I do play games through Steam, too. Pretty nice idea of Valve though. I'm set for the coming months though. ;)

Actually, what if the entire HLP community pitched in their coal into a single pile? What do you folks think of that idea

What is it with Valve and these MMOs?  You'd think they had something against them, what with how they're destroying the servers.  :P
Title: Re: The Great Pile Of Steam

They're free-to-play, and I guess they're paying Valve money to be part of this big Christmas pile thingie.

I just unpacked Company of Heroes. (And can't trade it for 30 days? What the Hell!? I've always been in good standing!  :ick:)

I wasn't too thrilled with the demo when it came out, so....

Game: Company of Heroes - Willing to trade for another game (you'll have to wait until the 27th, unless I can get Valve to do something about it :ick:)
Coupon: 25% off of any Valve title - Willing to trade for anything
Coal: 9 - Willing to trade for non-coupons.

on my wishlist.  http://steamcommunity.com/id/jgzinv/wishlist

Evidently it's a strategy title.

Will trade Multiwinia 50%, Reckless Disregard for Gravity, two coal, or Mafia for coupons, games, or coal.

EDIT: Sidenote, SOTS2 is still not fixed or even playable. Don't be tempted to buy it.

That seems... odd.
There were one or two other days that didn't have one.  Some good games up there, though.  SpaceChem is awesome, and though I haven't played it yet, I just got Super Meat Boy in the Humble Bundle.
Title: Re: The Great Pile Of Steam
Post by: BloodEagle on December 30, 2011, 04:53:09 pm
Other than today, there's always been one free achievement.

I mean, technically they're all free if you want to send them snail mail.  It just seems odd that they'd break the pattern.
Title: Re: The Great Pile Of Steam
Post by: Mongoose on December 30, 2011, 05:34:43 pm
I suppose if you're counting free-to-play games, most other days did have something free, but I personally don't consider downloading some MMO-esque game I never had any intention of playing, and then playing it just long enough to get a random achievement, to be "free" in the sense of actual effort required.  I'd much rather buy a daily deal game that I'd previously been interested in.

Wheee, up to 15 coal now!  I do want to save some for the prize drawing, but I may go ahead and craft 7 just for the hell of it, since there's not much functional difference between 8-in-several-million and 15-in-several-million odds.  I can't really complain, since I did wind up with a great game for free near the start.

How much value do you place on Reckless Disregard?  I remember the demo with mild fondness.

I'd like to off load them for either Batman AA GOTY

as in your house address?  cuz i'm pretty sure they don't have mine.  i know i didn't give it to them.  well, i did in the form of my billing address for the credit card, but i told them not to store it.  so theoretically they don't know where i live.  but we all know how much companies love to data mine consumers.
