You're trying to run the FS2 retail executable, which is known to not work on 64bit computers (which is most likely your case since you have 8GB RAM). Follow this tutorial (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0) to install FSOpen.

Also, wrong board.

Also, retail FS2 just generally doesn't get along with more than 2GB of RAM.

Set the compatibility for FreeSpace 2 to windows XP (service pack 2)

I don't think that will help. The problem is an integer overflow in the retail executable when you have 2 GB or more RAM. The only solution is to use FSO.

Works on my computer.  I'm running 8gb of ram and  a 64 bit  vista system .  I had the same problem when I got a new computer and the compatibility change corrected it.

But really though, why would you not use FSO in this day and age? There's literally no reason to for the average gamer.

The only reason I can think to use the retail exe is to ensure retail compatibility when modding. Not that it has any practical use anymore to begin with.
