Title: The definitive FS2
Post by: Black Wolf on June 02, 2002, 12:27:06 am
OK, there's a p1mp thread a few topics down from this one, so I'd like to make an early distinction between these two threads. In your opinion, what are the mods that every FS2 player should really have downloaded and sitting on their computer? The most original, the most useful, or the highest quality of the currently available FS2 mods, not neccesarily your favourite though.

I'd like to begin with the GTF Apollo, the GTF Valkyrie and the GTB Athena from FS1. These are probably used in at least half the campaigns on the net at the moment?, and should definitely be on everyone HD, if only for the memories (IMHO, they should have been in FS2 by default, but that's just me).

Continuing on, I think at least one of the Vasudan installations, either the Cairo or the Karnak to add to the exteme lack of stations in FS2 and possibly Robin Varley's Archeron station, which is very high quality and definitely fits a niche.

Finally on my list of ships are Bobbau's Ancient mods, very high quality and an easy way to add a new species to the game.

The only non ship mod I can think of that's really worth getting is the subspace pallette thing which allows subspace missions for FS2. It's absolutely neccesary.

Now I haven't tried every mod, so I don't know what should and should not be gotten, so any other ideas feel free to add.

My recommendations would be (aside from stuff I made :D) the following, especially for mission designers looking for things that the game lacks (i.e. a Vasudan installation):

GVI Cairo
SD Diablo
GVF Reshef
Asteroid backgrounds
Any of the Ancient ship mods
Shielded sentries

The ship mods in there need some gameplay balancing, but the models and concepts are really nice in my opinion.

I also have some models from DA but I am not sure which of those are available publicly.

GTF Banshee, which is the best (& probably the only) SOC fighter available

Most, if not all of the mods mentioned so far can be gotten from either the HLP mod archives,
archives.volitionwatch.com or
www.sectorgame.com/f2s

You'll have to navigate a bit in all three to find them though as I'm too lazy to go get the exact URLs.

A single model verison of the Karnak would be nice, it currents in three parts.

Other than that, all the FS1 ships not in FS2.

Ha  - none of your threads work!ΕΎ

The best advice on ships is this:
- look around the hosted section and pick what you like!
(beauty is in the eye of the beholder)

There I fixed it.

Links = Works Now!:cool:

My favorite of all time is the Nike.  Out guns the Deimos with it's LRBGreen but its balanced by not having any more direct fire beams(TSlash IIRC).

Also It goes with GTD Raynor well, now all we need is a cruiser or two in the same style.

:headz: No pimping. If you want to push your own ship you better damn well tell us why it's better than the ones already in freespace :D

The GTC Peleus, made by Fulgrymm for my campaigns in the Eden Project. :thepimp: Oh wait, it's not released yet. :D

Still, it provides a good alternative to the Aeolus (since there were only ever 2 dozen Aeoluses). The Peleus is about equal in terms of antifighter power, and better in terms of anticap (MGreen instead of 2 SGreen). Similar speed, and hull strength.

And in plot terms, it's cheaper than building Aeoluses, and it's an excuse for the GTVA to scrap old Fenrises and Leviathans, since it's partially made from Fenris hull, but with an entirely different midsection.

I think i WILL release the Peleus sometime soon. I've tested it enough.
