Title: Windows 7 doesn't know how to alphabetize!
Post by: Redstreblo on January 06, 2012, 09:57:19 am
Why is it windows 7 puts the sequel of something above the original and is there a way I can change it?

For instance in my start menu it shows Assassin's Creed II above Assassin's Creed and Left 4 Dead 2 above Left 4 Dead. Where's the logic there?

I don't think I've opened the Start Menu for anything other than Shutdown/Restart on either of my Win 7 PCs in months.  Jumplists FTW.

That is rather odd behaviour though.

And yet Battlefield and BioShock were ordered correctly.

What exactly is the problem, anyway?

It's possibly the space between the words that is causing it. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Windows still sorts directories by ASCII values, with a Space equalling 32, whereas capital letters start from 65. Try removing that space and see if it fixes it?

Edit: Still doesn't explain why Battlefield sorts fine, maybe it's to do with the DOS name or the like?

Why not ask Raymond Chen?

If/when those are shortcuts, they have the file extension .lnk. So Left 4 Dead is actually "Left 4 Dead.lnk" and Left 4 Dead 2 is "Left 4 Dead 2.lnk". And since space is before period in ASCII (and if Win sorts by ASCII values), Left 4 Dead 2 ends up before Left 4 Dead.

You could use classic shell, and sort it yourself.

I can explain the Battlefield things working as they do

What's different between Battlefield and Left 4 Dead? Battlefield always has a number following it, Left 4 Dead does not. How to fix? Take Left 4 Dead, and put a 1 after it. Same goes for Creed, put the I after it
Problem solved

if the cables are too think you can just disable alphabetical sort and sort them manually.

I removed the space after Left 4 Dead 2 and it was put in the correct order so Flipside had the right idea.

If the space is really what did it then the battlefield being in the correct order makes sense, because the space exists for each entry and so they are ordered by the numbers at the end. I cannot however explain why BioShock and BioShock 2 is in the correct order, if the space really does effect the way windows organizes things then shouldn't  BioShock 2 be above BioShock?

Oh and The E, there isn't a OMG the world is coming to an end problem, it's just that I like things organized and this is just bugging me. If it cannot be fixed, I won't worry about it.

The worst is windows will sometimes add a game shortcut to your games folder
this in itself isnt bad but the command line is non editable so if you need to add something like -window to the end you cant
you can delete it and create your own shortcut but then once you play the game windows adds it back so you end up with 2 shortcuts. One with a (tm) on the end

Also the games explorer stops working properly and will only occasionally add a game once you reach about 140 games, there is a program called game explorer editor but that becomes very crash prone when you hit 140
