Just curious to see how many of the active population here uses the cheats or not.
Personally i often use the techroom cheat, especially when campaign testing but that is it
-
All the time, when testing missions or features - it's often useful to be invulnerable, or ~k ing through inconvenient baddies. Otherwise, never.
-
i haven't ever used them in FSO, but back in the retail days after i'd beaten the campaign untold times (on easy :P) i started messing around with them to see what they did. mostly in single missions or the gauntlets though. i had fun sniping fighters with the beady fighter-mounted BFRed :)
-
Never to complete a campaign that I haven't played. Often to debug, fool around, or see if the mission designer had any contingencies prepared for the use of cheats. :D
-
For testing purposes in mods I'm working on, in badly balanced mods when I want to pass further or when I'm meeting strange bugs. Othwerise, cheats are just killing pleasure from the game.

I agree with most of the responses here. Testing, messing around, dealing with bugs (I'm looking at you, SGWP2), and other stuff are the only reasons I bust out the cheats.

U mess with a lot of custom weapons so I use the cycle through weapons cheat a lot to make sure the effect looks right (using a single-firepoint bank). It's a lot faster than doing it any other way.
-
My first use of cheating was the pass a mission that would otherwise, never end. The Demon class destroyer was disarmed, was being pounded by a Orion as well as countless bombers
It was at 2 health
It never budged, for 20 minutes, from that 2 health. So I killed it and got on with the new Silent Threat campaign

I voted snuffalupagus. Now, how does one go about turning on cheats?
-
type www.freespace2.com fast without pauses.
then a sign will come up telling you that cheats are active, then you can use any of the combinations to activate the cheats wanted.

This poll lacks a "No, never, because I don't have a qwerty keyboard" option.

Hmm, that might have been the reason why I never figured out how to use them.

Wait a second... Ctrl+Shift+S is a cheat ? I thought it was a feature ! You don't even need www.freespace2.com to use it !

Its a key combination not advertised in any way by the game's content, supporting literature or by the devs/publisher, also there is no button activate it which is how everything else works in the FS menu system. It is at best a developers function.
-
Ctrl+Shift+S is something that was added by the SCP.
-
thought it was retail? cant seem to find any verification on wiki either
-
If that's the case, that option should probably be removed from the poll, too.

Or you could just boot up retail and find out...
I feel compelled to actually go back on one of the Sath missions and calling in the Bravos. I've always wanted to do that

Voted for Snuffy; I generally use ~+K, invincibility (self and other), and weapon cycling if I'm in a cheaty mood. I *do* use "cheats" frequently when FREDding or developing weapons, but the only time I actually *cheat*-cheat is if I feel that a campaign is too bull**** to beat without them. Like ST:R on my netbook when I can't really even see hostile ships due to the res it has to play on, plus the lag in big fights.
Why isn't there a "sometimes/ some cheats" option? Not all the cheats are exactly helpful.
-
*raises hand*
Is it possible to exchange out the functions of the existing cheats to make our own cheats?
-
I never figured out how to make cheats work, so I test stuff without them.
