Well I misplaced my FS2 disks, and my new desktop PC is up and running, so I need a new copy.
Should i buy from GOG.com for 6$ or buy the actual disks off Ebay or the like?
Sub questions: Anyone know when the next FS1+ST+FS2 sale is?
Also, If i use GOG, how many times can i download it, and on what computers?
-
If you use GOG, you can download your purchase game unlimited times you want. In fact, you download a setup where you could install the game on your PC. There is no DRM. So, you can install on every PC you have.
When you get Freespace 2, you can replay to Freespace 1 and his extension Silent Threat on Freespace 2 SCP. Just grab Freespace Port 3.3.

Yeah. Buy from GOG for $5.99, get a DRM-free installer. Worried about backups? Just copy that installer to any media you want (CD, DVD, flash drive, external HDD, network storage). Lost all of those backups? Redownload from GOG for no extra charge.
The only benefit of an actual physical copy would be the possibility to fondle an actual physical copy of FS2.

I fondle my [REDACTED]
Hmm. Right. Anyway.
the only caveats with teh GOG version is that:
A: Make sure you are not installing to the "Program Files" directory (or "Program Files (x86)" on 64bit) and
B: to relocate the MVE files (and only the MVE files) from data2 and data3 to your data\movies and then delete data2 and data3.

that name sounds familiar. you were around the old teamwars group yes?

Yep, i was top 3 wasent I?
Btw, i dont think the GOG edition came with the 1.2v patch? How do I attain that, or do i not need it for FSO?

The GOG version is already patched to 1.2, so you don't have to patch it yourself. (And yes, you would need the 1.2 patch to run FSO if you didn't already have it.)

I was fortunate enough to have a friend with an original copy, which I made a copy of with his approval.
-
The 1.20 patch (for those of us that still need to apply it) is necessary only because of the updates to root_fs2.vp. I think that is the only one affected by the patch.
Otherwise, as far as running FSO is concerned, only the VP needs to be correct.

does anyone know if the sci-fi sim of the year edition came at 1.2 already? i think it did, but i really can't remember for sure.
-
I'm fairly sure it did; I can't remember ever having to update my Interplay 20th Anniversary release, which should be the same as that one.
-
I wish they expanded their number of copies they were willing to sell... i wanted one too. What was it capped at, 200?

i don't remember tbh, i was a very late arriver to that scene (and FS2 online in general). i pretty much got there in time to see it die. i was in the very last feeble attempt at a teamwars run, but i don't think i ever even flew with my actual partner.
