Title: Iron Sky
Post by: Lt.Cannonfodder on February 08, 2012, 12:03:27 pm
The most fun movie of the year premiere's this Saturday in Berlin. The final trailer is here for everyone to enjoy: http://youtu.be/Py_IndUbcxc

I don't know. Star Wreck was more or less literally the worst movie I've ever seen (I couldn't even watch all of it), so I've never had high hopes for this one. The trailer doesn't really do anything to persuade me otherwise, although I'll try to give it the benefit of the doubt (until I've seen it on tv eventually, most likely).

Oh, come on. It's about ze glorious Reichsflugscheibenflotte. Even if it turns out to be a trainwreck, it's gonna be an AWESOME trainwreck.

Star Wreck was an amateur movie. A great achievement yes, but in the end just a feature length fan film.

Iron Sky is much, much more. It's done with tongue in cheek and most importantly just plain fun.

I can't believe they actually made it! All those years ago, watching the concept trailer, and thinking to myself, "This looks cool but it'll probably never happen", and they actually made it! Any word if they're planning on releasing in the US in theaters, or more of a DVD thing?

it looks better than battleship.

i can't help but think that this is mostly tongue-in-the-cheek after watching that.

Actually, if anything, the trailer shows way much higher production values than Star Wreck. Star Wreck was a bunch of kids playing at making a parody, with budget measured in cola and pizza. Essentially a fan fic, just having fun. This is a way more serious effort that looks very interesting. Also, LtCannonfodder here was part of the CGI team working on it so it's worth seeing it just so we can spot CGI errors and bug the man about them  :p

Youtube comments tell the truth.  It's just Arkham Asylum IN SPAAAAACE! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RecycledINSPACE)

Just like Avatar is just Pocahontas IN SPAAAAACE!

RUBBER is not IN SPAAAAACE, it's about a tire that kills people by making their heads explode.  With telekinetic powers.

It's ****ing brilliant I tell ya!

Actually I'm rather interested in seeing Lock Out.  If it's by the folks who did Taken then it must be awesome.

That trailer doesn't do it as much justice for Guy Pearce I guess

But rubber was actally quite good, I did a double feature alongside hobo with a shotgun a little while back, enjoyed them both

Most of the characters in the movie are caricatures, but not in the way you would think. Do not expect basic Hollywood political correctness though.

I am looking forward to a funny movie but I don't really want a bunch of 'ha ha black people' jokes in the same way I don't want a bunch of 'ha ha poop' jokes. It's lower-level humor than what usually works for me.

Poop jokes make the world go around.

But I see where you're coming from, it's one of the reasons that I've only watched this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116126/) once or twice. Yeah it's funny, but I could watch better.

Still, it's got to be better than 'Star Wreck' and that is something at least. I'll watch it just so that I can overwrite the part of my memory that remembers the crappy thing.

On the other hand, you couldn't get away with the two black guys who only speak Jive from Airplane these days. And the movie would be poorer for it.

I have seen the film and I liked it. I'll try to keep this little evaluation spoiler free as much as possible, but proceed at your own caution.

The film was good, in my view. It had a few weak points, but overall I liked it. The pacing was pretty good, acting was good as far as primary characters were concerned (some of the minor characters I didn't like quite as much, but worked reasonably well in the film), and the plotline itself managed to carry itself through the movie without any significant failures.

The weak points were certain characters, which were a bit over the top considering their motivation and characterization, but they ended up as side characters in the film rather than central piece of it - even if some of them had important role in driving the plot, their limited screen time meant they didn't become too much of an annoyance.

Also, one particular character was (in my opinion) somewhat underused in the film, as I didn't really get much of a feel for that character.

As far as character development goes, there was some, mainly on the female lead character, but it was handled somewhat abruptly and suddenly, and I think it missed some of its potential, but it actually ended up working quite well.

Visuals were mostly excellent, as expected. The only thing that I would have preferred would have been more realistic depiction of the stars on the background sky on space shots, but that's just my preference on the side of realism in these things. Although I have to say I would have preferred to see recognizeable constellations instead of randomly generated starfield backgrounds. Also, as you might expect, distances in space were not exactly realistically handled, BUT to the credit of the creators I have to say the film was cut in a manner that minimized the unbelievably short travel times and distances between space ships, Earth and Moon, and in the end it didn't feel like I was looking at ships flying in a miniature Solar System.

I also thought the ending was quite appropriate considering (what I think was) the theme of the film.

The end result, overall, was a film that is thoroughly enjoyable, a little bit thought-provoking, occasionally very funny film that misses some of its potential - but not much.

i probibly wont be able to see it till it comes out on dvd. so im kinda trying to stay away from any spoilers about the movie. ht's post was vauge enough where it doesnt give away anything, but id appreciate spoiler tags if anyone wants to discuss the movie in detail.

im not gonna raise a stink if the movie comes off as a tad racist. in fact id be disappointed if it didnt (it has fricken nazis in it). the us has this really bad habbit about turning race into a huge issue in an attempt to suppress racism. its a really counter intuitive way to handle the problem.

Saw it myself too on last monday. And it was in fact a really enjoyable movie. Granted if one does not know some certain Internet Jokes then quite a lot of the jokes in the movie will go unnoticed. But I had some good laughs so I'm satisfied.

The starfield was actually created in a very similar way you do skyboxes in FreeSpace; it's a single high resolution starfield mapped cubically onto a sphere object. We didn't anticipate that someone would actually look for proper constellations, but I should have know you would :P

In our defence we did try to keep things somewhat real where we could. Rule of cool obviously was the name of the game, but there's at least some effort put into making things seem plausible.

Spoiler:
I hope you noticed the Orion nuclear drive on the GWB. Early on there even was a scene showing it firing, but it was dropped since explaining it to the audience would have been too difficult.

Well, it's not so much me looking for them, rather than noticing they're not there.

It all looked very good and the blazing bright milky way sort of set the mood for the background visuals to be a bit more extravagant rather than realistic, so it all fit together good.

Spoiler:
Well, I was looking more at the cannons, CIWS, missiles and nuclear bombs going off than details like that. I might go and see it again, to look for details like that, or wait for it to be released on Blu-Ray.

If it had actually used the Orion drive, I probably would have recognized it. And I'll probably recognize it if look at the ships design with a more critical eye.

I loved how the Finnish were the only ones that didn't arm their space ships... :p

I'll see if I can post some images of the ship models when we get an go ahead to do so. There's actually quite a bit of thought put into them.
