Title: What makes you happy?
Post by: Nemesis6 on February 13, 2012, 10:25:28 am
No, it's not about drugs. Recently I realized something about myself -- My happiness is not contingent on many things. That is to say, rather, I tend to cling to small things, and use the general things like playing games, spending time with friends, etc, as a general "it's just what I do" thing; it keeps me busy, entertained/whatever. The only thing that really makes me "happy" for the time being, though, is talking to this girl I know. Before that, it was my first girlfriend. As crappy as that relationship turned out, while it lasted, it was my major source of happiness, so I focused on that, and having that as my foundation if you will, things just changed for the better, in every aspect. It turned out very, very problematic when the relationship ended, though; totally swept me off my feet, and then I had to start looking for something else.

I'm wondering whether anyone else here have structured their life like this, or if I'm just very weird like that. Video games, sports, socializing... what's your drug?

Scoring good hits on the firing range is quite fun. In my case, happiness is directly proportional to accuracy, distance and weapon caliber.  :)
Guess that you could extend that onto succeeding in any challenge, such as finishing a difficult video game segment or climbing a mountain.
Horseriding, especially long rides with gallop on the hills is another thing I like to do, especially if the weather is good.
Once upon a time, scoring a great deal on Steam or an auction also seems to make me happy.

Being proved right makes me happy,  :D

Also, finding that I'm better at certain things than certain other people can make me happy/bring a smile to my face.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

A man who as a physical being is always turned toward the outside, thinking that his happiness lies outside him, finally turns inward and discovers that the source is within him.

This post is best post.

Kidding aside, I find myself to be happiest when interacting with the people I'm closest to in a given moment.

I have a wife.

I daresay you can take that in whatever sense (sweet or sexual) you choose and it'll probably work.

I've come to terms I won't ever be truly happy. I'll be happy temporarily while socializing during work, or while playing games, but none of it equates any true happiness

I don't crutch myself to something or someone to make me happy. Afterall, what happens when it's removed? You lose the crutch and you fall down the cliff to your utter demise until you find another crutch. I strive to be happy without having something else make me happy. It's not working too good, but at least I don't get derailed if something goes wrong. Shrug it off and continue

do not be a slave to your emotions. i consider my emotions to be highly irrelevant. at most they get in the way of things that must be done. this kind of attitude will make it easier to stomp baby seal skulls when the situation demands it (or detonating warheads over large population centers for that matter). so stop being a bunch of emo dicks, and just focus on being dicks.

You're like Master Yoda. At least a dark side of the force version of Yoda. And you make Palpatine look like a moron, who haven't grasped yet, what it means to be truly evil.  :P

Don't even get me started on those loud, annoying, obnoxious, ham-stealing, butter-licking, bread-eating, chair-destroying, scratching, shedding, biting, keyboard-walking creatures.  :)
The worst thing is, it's difficult to be angry at them for long, since after they destroy half of your house, they come to you with their puppy eyes and pretend nothing has happened.
BTW, in case I haven't mentioned, I live in a cattery. Anybody wants a Maine Coon (As soon as we have any for sale, that is. We're out of kittens as of now)?

i think the thing i like most about cats is how evil they are. i dont see how i go to flick him in the nose for chewing up my headphones, but only manage to get as far as wubbing his bewwy. i mean seriously they use their cuteness to get away with atrocious behavior. if hitler was a cat we would have just wubbed his bewwy and gave him back all the nations he conquered and a bag of catnip to boot.

****! I saw the thread title and hoped I could post that before someone else. Bravo, sir. Bravo.

As for what makes me happy, that's debatable. But I can tell you what makes me unhappy; other pop-culture nerds jumping on jokes before I can post them.

That said, I'm actually rather comforted that I'm among so many likeminded souls that all think of the same damn gag at the same time.

I suspect a lot of people are depressed at 17.

Every time I stop to think about it I'm happy, most of the time I think I'm too busy to notice - which is probably why I'm happy. Voltaire had a point.

I gotta ask - why do you suspect that? Maybe it's different where you live, all the kids I talk to are either fake-sad emo kids or just too ignorant to be sad about life. Whenever I try to talk about how I feel I get ridiculed for being different and pessimistic.

i didnt start getting depressed until well into adulthood. i mean they told me i was depressed, and they gave me pills for depression. id stack my meth pills for the weekends and it was quite fun. but generally speaking i wasnt totally depressed. in the late 90s we had goth kids (though the music they listened to equally ****ty as emo is), but i hung with the metalheads. everyone thought i had potential (foolish humans!), so at the time i had a good outlook. nah **** didnt start getting bad till later, like when i started working.

I remember a manager once accused me of having Anger Management issues, to which I replied "Yes, just about everything Management does makes me angry."

^ this

thing is when you are at a young age it is easy to get help with mental issues, so if you have any of them its good to be young. but then you grow up and get a job, and that job doesnt have a health plan, and even if it did you couldnt afford it cause you are a newb and dont make a lot of money. for physical health issues its less of a problem, because you have the bonus of youth, but if you were crazy you get completely cut off from professional help that you were receiving things can go horribly, horribly wrong. of course add to that the fact that you are always tired, and you dont have time for relationships because you have to work weekends to eat. and if your relations with coworkers are bad then you are pretty much in a ****ty situation and have the potential to go nuclear as it were.

Funny, because I was referred to a mental health clinic after a bit of a breakdown a few months ago. I saw them once, at the end all they told me was that I "wasn't clinically psychotic" and that's the last I ever heard from them.
Either I'm missing something, or the school counselor referred me to the wrong people.

I used to be pretty upset with how things were going with my life. Not much in my life has changed...still stuck in the same situation. It's not the worst place to be in... but it isn't at all what I imagined for myself at the end of my twenties. Still I'm probably in a slightly happier place right now. Better work environment and I think I've become more accepting of the place that I'm in for the moment. Happiness is relative I'm finding...

Sleep (If I don't get enough, I am absolutely guaranteed to turn into a stressed, depressive, cranky *****)
Success
Girlfriend
Flying
Good music
Friends
Target Practice (I know that feel Dragon)
Hacking around with new gadgets
Kicking ass in a good CTF match on Skulltag/ZDaemon

The list is quite long really. I'd say my general mood depends mostly on sleep though.

My faith in Christ
My Wife and Son
I'm employed(Job gets annoying sometimes, but I'm blessed with it being very secure)
I own the place I live
My cars are reliable
My Father and Mother, and Father and Mother in Law are great people
ect, ect...

In a few words, all of this equals this:

If I am not happy, I'm an idiot.

Okay, apparently I've figured out what makes things better
Whiskey on the rocks, then sleep right afterwards

Alcohol is like a sleeping pill

I slept like a person who doesn't have kids
