Title: Distirtions in Shochwaves?
Post by: -Norbert- on February 23, 2012, 03:27:00 am
Is is possible to give shockwaves a distortion effect, a bit like the current ship engines have?
I think, especially for exploding capital ships, this might look good, if it can be done.

At least since 3.6.14 rc4 (as this was the first version I used when I reinstalled FSO a month ago) there is the option under "experimental" called "framebuffer explosions". It is exactly what you're looking for.

Of course it's also present in the new rc5

I forgot about checking that tab and the forum search didn't turn up anything. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that option controls it for both engines and shockwaves, doesn't it?  If you have one you should have the other I think.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. When I got back to FSO I started with 3.6.14 rc4 and initially noticed the great looking new engine effect. However it was not until much later I learned about the framebuffer shockwaves option in the "experimental" settings. Yes I had seen it before, but was a bit hesitant to switch anything experimental on.

But then people said they'd been using it for a long time and it would work without problems, so I finally activated it. ;)

I can confirm that. The engine distortions were on by default, the shockwave distortions had to be enabled via the experimental tab in the launcher.

Tried it. Looks good but I prefer the classic explosions as explosions in space dont cause distortion in reality.

Then you'd have to play without shockwaves alltogether....

Obligatory "realism ? in MAH freespace ? DO NOT WANT".

nothing about the freespace explosions is realistic at all

you might well get a bit of distortion through the heated medium of the blast :technobabble:

lol next thing we know someone could be *****ing about how we can hear fighters swooshing past you in vacuum.

Distortion looks great. I've always wanted it ever since they started implementing shader.

I think bumping a 20 day old thread is frowned upon here at HLP...Just a heads up.

Considering some people insist on "bumping" threads that died 8 years ago, not really that much.

Agreed.
