I had a little idea wathcing a TV proggy about the land speed record esterday....
basically, how about a FS hot-rodding competition. whoever designs the fastest ship over a set course - say from 1 Hecate to another - wins.
To make it properly interesting, set constraints.... like;
- acceleration decreases with max speed
- afterburner speed decreases with duration and increases with energy used
- Reactor power & top speed decreases with adding afterburner fuel
- Speed decreases with hitpoint - maybe make it an obstacle course where they is a risk of being blown up
- Speed increases with size, buyt acceleration decreases (similar to 1st bit)
Just something so you have to 'tune up' the model.... and add extra marks for sheer coolness :D
Any thoughts?
-
you would need rules...
like max speed reduced by 5 kph per 10 extra hitpoints
I don't agree with the larger size/higher top speed thing

In retrospect, it should be the other way round - larger, slower. Mainly so no-one could cheat and make a 1km fighter that crosses the course really quickly ( ;) ).
Need to get a maths blokey to work out equations for the speed... like max speed = (oclk speed / accelration) * reactor or sommat
EDIT:
Maybe set it in a sort of tunnel, like wipeout or something - so turning speed and accelleration really matter.
diamodgeezer suggested some sort of hot-rodding thing a while ago, but I said it wasn't possible with the AI - but this may be, even if it just amounts to a time trial / multiplayer game.
Maybe even require weapons to blow down set obstacles or something, so it's more difficult to finetune the 'racer' ?

Mark the path with nav bouys, you have to go between each pari of nav bouys or you're disqualified...perhaps make it a, how should we say it, aggresive competition? :p
-
Easy enough. Take a ship, give it 360*/s maneuvering, and give it burners that go at 1200000000000 kps. It's no fun with table editing so simple and unlimited.
-
Why not restrict it to game ready ships, ones not designed to chew up space?
Perhaps it would be better to have a course laid out with navboyes and let them fight for the finish line. Speed, then, wouldn't be the deciding factor.
-
heehee, like i said, aggressive competition.

I challenge you to hit a dragon, her, even a basilisk with that. I challenge you to fly the right direction in fact.

You could make fly-trough rings like in X-Wing: Alliance!
Those were COOL!;7

Yeah, he's right, i find a Pegasus hard to control at times.
And the agressive race is a good idea. Faster ships that get in front would be vulnerable to getting shot at. If you get destroyed in multiplayer, you could be respawned (i think) with a few seconds delay and have to catch up.
Also to give a bit more depth to the race, you could use a series of checkpoints, as suggested above, but you can complete them in any order.
Perhaps the checkpoints could be subbsysems, you have a large ship (destroyer or above), and you have to race around it and be the first to scan all the subsystems.

I was thinking of a dogfight where each person has to scan each of the nav bouys, but im not sure how well that would work for objectives....it'd be fun though.
-
You need an equation for maximums. Like:
(MaxSpeed*Acceleration)+(TurnTime*Afterburner) < 2000
....to keep it fair.
It'd be better as a multi-player, all out battle to the finish line using nav buoys as the course. Take into account ship ability and weaponry modifications and set a limit. Give infinite weapon energy and capacity and see who makes it to the finish line. Make it like Wip3out.

That's something I had considered for some multiplayer missions I was thinking of doing:
- A race, with hoops to fly through and only kinetic weapons so you can knock people off course. You MUST fly through the hoops.
- Attack a group of Sathanases with the Golgotha, or more than one Golgotha... ;)
-
Well, of course you'd have to set limits...but I jut want to make something ludicrously uselss, yet cool :D
Plus i wouldn;t min trying out building a wipeout-ish ship ;)

Hehe. Graviton missiles that smash you into the rings.
You could just have the race through an dense asteroid field with only kinnetic weapons and no shields. You'd have to use skill to smash people into the asteroids and eliminate them. And with no shields it'd stop people just diverting power to shields and ramming their way through.
-
Too bad I put off modding my Wasp until I finish everything. practically 2-D profile from the front/back, only slightly easier to hit from the sides, goes at some 150+kps without the burners and, among other maneuvering feats, can fly backwards (I'm still working on how to do that, but there is a way). Holds maybe four missiles and a pair of light primaries, sure, but I've got some nasty-ass missiles in the making, too.:D

remote detonated Df missiles with a negative blast, so they pull the craft in range when they blow up :D

thats brilliant aldo...great idea...perhaps an energy drain as well?

amybes another bank of rmeote detonation weapons, like Pirahnas...fire a 'gravitybomb', then shove a high yield warhead into the cluster of attracted fighters
Or some sort of EMP scrambler that cuts out engines for a few seconds (not sure if possible).
Or a stupidly massive missile that effectively creates an explosive barrier (energy net)until it's hit or blows up :D
-
ooohhh, fun idea...make a certain amount of 'points' avalible, and things would cost points...
i.e.
Subach 250
+5 km/hr 10
+5 hp 10
other idea is that ships have no energy regen, so you could 'buy' energy with the points for your ship. This also would work for weapons, so that you only have so many kinetic cannon shots
-
You have a set number of points to use per ship when building it...
x points for acceleration (x * 1 m/s)
x " " " speed
x" " " weapons - x per firepoint, and x for each type of weapon supported
and X for shields / armour (armour cheaper - doesn't grow back)
-
That's a good idea. That would keep the ships balanced.

would fs2 support that or would the game crash?
-
aldo: the engine-killing missile you speak of already exists: FS1's disruptor missile. I loved that thing... :D
Are you now talking about modding FS to support some kind of tournament racing game, then? It'd be pretty cool and different, yet not require too many ship mods. Plus, it would be like wacky races. ;)
In addition to kinetic weapons, disrupting and energy draining weapons would be a good thing to have. However, if you're talking about indirectly killing people by smashing them into things, why not just give them the opportunity to buy guns - only make them so horribly expensive they sacrifice other stuff in return.
And if energy-draining or damaging weapons are to be used, shields should also be available to purchase.
Hell, I'm talking about a 'purchase' and balance system of play that I'm not even sure the FS engine would take. However, I'm sure the source-coders could manage, though it's need a new front-end (or a heavily modified one).

Just fiddlin' with an idea, to be honest... it started of as an FS-speed contest for ships mods :D
could pretty easily do a multiplayer thing with a modelled track, like wipout.... actual single player would be a pain in the arse - you'd need to create a long path for a lap, then attack on that (so the computer ship uses its afterburners ;) )...or summat
You could maybe add in a 'buy gun' thing, by using a sort of campaign structure or something...enough points wins a prize. but it would really have to be multiplayer, I guess.... and I have a 56k :(
