I've been asked to make a table entry for a weapon that fires two different kind of shots at the same time, an anti-shield pulse and an anti-armor pulse. I've been looking over the table files and the more I look the more I think this isn't actually possible, does anyone know how this might be done?
-
The best thing I can think of for non-beams is to make a turret with two firing points very close together, with identical firing rates and recharge times.
In the tbl entries, make the default weapons the shield disruptor and Armor weapon.
If this is a fighter weapon, that's a tough one. You could try to look and see how the turrets work on the heavy bombers. And make the shield/armor weapon specific to 1 type of fighter.
Hope this helps (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

or you can make a single shot that is efficient against both shields and hull...

Yea, that too (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/redface.gif)
I think what he wants though is 1 weapon that fires two different weapon effects.

Thats exactly what he asked me to make, and while the turret idea is great, this is supposed to be a player primary, so it has to actually be ONE gun.

particle spew, That'll put these weird orange globes following the laser head. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Ok... since I am the one who asked for this weapon, here is specifically what I am looking for...
You guys have all given great answers so far... let me clear a couple things up. What I would like to use is a single primary gun that "appears" to fire two bursts, with different bitmaps if possible. The two bursts do not nesseccarily need to do different damage to different things. We can give that appearance with the tbl entry. I want a gun that will fire one type of burst, which is rapidly followed by a secondary burst. Then a pause, and the process repeats. (NOTE: When I say pause, we're talking fractions of a second here... )
Anyone have any ideas for this, or something similar?

best you could probally hope for is having the glow and bitmaps not in the same place which is easy - but the gap wont be very big (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)though might be able to open it up to noticeable levels with lenthinging the laser head lenght to huge length
-
You could so something with a ****ed up trail, but that's all I can think of.
-
did anyone think of having both bitmaps in the same file? then turn down the laser glow, and you'll see both bitmaps in the one shot (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
With a laser glow of 0 0 0 you get the pure texture (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, these are all really great ideas and I'll remember them, but the point isn't to have it LOOK like it's firing two different shots, he wants it to REALLY shoot two DIFFERENT kind of shots. different damage charactaristics and everything. Having it just look like two shots wouldn't be so hard in comparison. I was thinking that maybe some kind of trick with the spawn function would do it, but you can't spawn two different things, can you?

Morris... you should read more carefully your own threads...
-
You could take a normal weapon pcx file, color the front half one color, the middle pure green(invisible) or black, and the tail another color.
If you're going for appearances that could work. For a sound effect, just sandwich one wav onto the back of another.
Hope this helps. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

no no no you guys. he is looking for a weapon that fires 2 different bursts, both burst doing something different. (one kills shields, the other armor)
i'm sorry morris, but this is completely impossible. you'll have to tell your friend that.

Lol... I would say something about this thread, but.... nevermind... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

Um, hello?!
Make the laser have 2 looks in the same pcx, and set the table to do the 2 things you want.
You CANNOT do it any other way.
There is no way to have *1* gun have *2* seperate purposes like that.

I was pretty sure that was the case, but I thought someone might know something I didn't. Blackace actually WASN'T the person who brought up this specific question, it was wEvil who asked me if this was possible. I told him probably not, but I'm always willing to allow for the possibility that someone else knows something I don't.
