Title: new gude for manual install for macs ( with images)
Post by: gamerman on February 29, 2012, 01:12:04 am
I was thinking about writing one up would this be an issue I think if would be players had a visual of both of the launchers it would help them configure it. I am basically writing something like that now for my friend...thoughts?

Considering that there really isn't a proper installation guide for Mac at the moment...

Seriously, if you're writing something like that, please post it when it's done. It definitely wouldn't hurt anyone and the more tech-savvy Mac users/players could also go through it and give feedback.

This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=79546.0) doesn't count?

See, this is why I don't post all that much anymore. I don't even know what is going on in here anymore. That guide would count quite a bit.

I looked at what was on the website here last night after I posted and discovered that really the installation of freespace 2 open is covered nicely what is missing a launcher guide.

Soulstorms launcher has a bit different interface than the windows launcher or the wxlauncher. I could write a launcher guide that is what is really needed.

When I get the tiger 10.4 launcher guide (soulstorms) and wxlauncher for intel based.  I will post it here for comments. I do get wordy at times.

  :)

Hey gamerman, I was just wondering what specific information you're looking for that the current OS X install instructions (that you can find here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=79546.0)) don't have.

There's an article on the FreeSpace Wiki here (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Soulstorm%27s_OS_X_Launcher) that has instructions about Soulstorm's launcher. You can get a wiki account here (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup&returnto=Main_Page) and edit/add to it if you want.

I think the installation guides are great

Editing the wiki will most likely be a better option I will look into it. This would not be for me but,  for the new player that may have trouble understanding the launchers. Forgive me I use help write manuals with images for a few Linux distributions in the past. I just find that visuals tell more that words. Help some people connect better with how to do or to perform a task.

Gamerman,

I fit that description (Mac Noob) and just recently installed FS2. What stumped me while reading and installing was impatience   ;)

Eager to install the game and get playing that I didn't realise that the Ez7z extraction hadn't finished processing. Many of my Mod files were incomplete.

There's no task bar in Ez7z extraction. It might be worth mentioning to avoid problems.

No mention of the HUD table in the Mac forum guide, where to place, how to obtain etc. A download link: hud-hdg.tbm would be handy.

Unable to make a new table (.tbm) in Textedit the solution was to edit an existing file (found in a forum post) and avoid being forced with a .txt extension

A visual guide would only add to the existing instructions, which are great - everyones efforts and assistance are appreciated. This is truly a great game and the community support is fantastic.

To save without .txt extension, (at lease in WinDOwS) you must select the 'file type' of "All Files" (*.*), and then you can type in 'filename.tbm', and it will not force the .txt extension on the end.

The problem is, is when the file type 'Text file' (*.txt) is selected, WinDOwS (or in this case, Mac OS), helpfully adds '.txt' to the end of whatever is typed into the filename box.  This is so you don't end up with a file named "What I did last night. lol" (with an extension of '. lol' and thus end up unable to open the file in Notepad later. (Unless you opened Notepad, then manually dragged the file over, or used File > Open and browsed for the file.)
