Title: Game/Gamestation going under? If you Pre-ordered ME3 with them read this NOW.
Post by: QuantumDelta on February 29, 2012, 01:05:09 pm
Just a warning for anyone who preordered with Game or Gamestation.
You have probably recieved an email by now telling you your preorder was cancelled, since then, Zaavi and TheHut, as well as Play have sold out of PC-collectors edition ME3.
If you want to preorder anywhere, at the moment, you can only find it at Amazon.
I don't imagine amazon's stock will last much longer either...

Game's stock price has dropped 17% or so since the announcement, and it really does look like they're going under.

Once it's out, it'll most likely be on Steam after a short while.
It's the simplest way to get it, IMHO (plus, you might avoid Origin that way).

Ah, right, if you're a big fan, you could also buy a boxed version (won't save you from Origin though).

Why do I need 'saving' from origin?
You don't think I've been using it for the best release of last year?
Or the ME3 Demo? :P

Personally, I don't thrust it. EA has a history of screwing things up with their DRM, so I'm not eager to install their distribution system, especially that Steam is basically the same, but better.

I don't thrust it either. That could damage my comp. Litterally.

In all seriousness, if given the choice, I'll take it on Steam. If not, it's not just the fact it's on Origin that will prevent me from buying it if I want to buy it.

I think it'll be on Steam. All major releases nowdays are, except for Crysis 2 (which also was there, until EA released DLCs which broke Steam rules).

It will not be on Steam for the foreseeable future, given that ME3 will likely use Origin for much of its multiplayer component (if you have played the demo, you will have noticed that matchmaking is mediated via Origin, much like matchmaking in games like TF2 or Space Marine is mediated via Steam). As such, making the game available on Steam would involve either replacing the Origin hooks with Steam hooks (which will create a wall between the people on Origin and the ones on Steam), or adding them in, leading to the same cluster**** that games like Batman: Arkham City are already experiencing (because you'd have to deal with two different overlays, one for Origin, one for Steam).

Last but not least, EA withdrew from Steam for the express purpose of cutting out as many middlemen as possible. Why would they go back now?

Money?
Steam generates a lot of revenue. It's widely used, frequently holds attractive sales and has a pretty efficient advertising methods, so it can net EA a lot of cash. As for a clusterfrack with multiplayer, I doubt EA would care about that one (neither will I, as I play mostly for SP). That's the player's problem, not EA's (and they had already shown how much they care about players). Of course, it indeed might not be released on Steam. In that case, I'll either turn to piracy or tell COMODO to lock Origin down in sandbox mode (and it it'll refuse to work like that, it'll pirate it anyway). One thing is certain. I'm not paying a full price for it and let it screw my computer up.

For Valve, yes.

Depending on who sets the timetable for the sales, and who eats the price differences. For example, if Amazon puts a book on sale, Amazon will eat the losses incurred when they are reducing the price, I do not know how Valve handles these things.

And this is where it becomes clear that you really have no clue whatsoever. The reason EA told Bioware to include a multiplayer component was to increase ME3's longevity, and to allow the addition of multiplayer-centric DLC to the portfolio of choices available. So yeah, EA does care. A lot.

Yes, because that has happened with Origin so many times. Besides, you let Steam run wild on your system, but Origin is evil and needs to sandboxed? weird set of priorities you have there.

Meh, you've seen one evil gaming distribution system, you've seen them all. I prefer playing ME3 over obsessing which is worse, Steam or Origin. Every company under the sun has the same agenda - getting money out of your pocket and into their bank accounts. You can think some of them are different while they're laughing all the way to the bank - the only real difference is some are more successful at getting your money than others. I don't see enough differences between Steam and Origin to warrant not installing Origin when you're already on Steam. You already made the biggest decision, which was to use online gaming services. I don't see how Origin is the Source of All Evil. It probably just stems from the fact it's considered hip to hate EA these days. Which isn't without it's reasons, but there's a sane limit to obsessing over it.

Me neither. Though without doing any research, I would just assume it's a European equivalent to Gamestop. Might even be the same corporation.

They were a subsidiary of Electronics Boutique, which is a subsidiary of Gamestop, for a little while.
Started off as an independent British retailer, got bought by EB, bought themselves back out from under EB, EB in the UK went bust while they survived, but only for about an extra 5 years or so by the looks of it.
They're probably the UKs single biggest games retailer, Game and Gamestation are almost the last dedicated video game store over here.

With EA I would indeed be worried about purchased games disappearing from Origin at some point, because they are no longer profitable.

EA has an entirely different track record than Valve.

Placing trust in Valve may or may not be wise...   but I would argue that placing trust in EA is more or less being gullible to a fault. ;)

Valve could indeed be doing a lot of truly nasty things with Steam if they were evil.
EA could... well everybody knows already that EA is evil. ;)

How nice to see that the proud tradition of dodging the point is still alive and well. Come back to complain when EA actually goes ahead and removes a game that is a) old and b) still actively played not only from the list of games it actively supports in terms of keeping an online infrastructure for it around, but also removes it from the Origin accounts of the people who bought it through that service. Until then, all you have is a vague feeling of uncertainty and uneasiness at the thought of giving EA some of your money.

Gamestation was once cool.  You could walk into a Gamestation and then walk out with a bagfull of NES and Megadrive games.  They stocked a fair amount of retro second hand stuff.

Then Game bought Gamestation and came to the conclusion that rather than putting all the retro stock into a "£1 50p each" bin it was more profitable to put it all into a "Trade refuse" bin.  :(

I'm lucky that I found that copy of NES Elite when I did.
