Title: game crashes, any help would be appreciated!
Post by: adratgg on March 05, 2012, 07:44:57 pm
i have tried to start the game (FS2O with the Blue Planet mod) multiple times, never gets to the main menu. i just get this error message every time  :banghead: :

Weapon explosion 'MS_Impact' does not have an LOD0 anim!
ntdll.dll! NtWaitForSingleObject + 21 bytes
kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes

as you can see, I even used the debug .exe, but to no avail. for alas, there is no fs2_open.log when the crash hits  :sigh:

Just to make sure, you checked for the debug log in FreeSpace/data right? It's not a good sign if you really don't see it.

Yep, follow JeffVader's instructions to retrieve the log and we can solve the problem very quickly.

aiiiight, what happens is when i use the debug for 3.6.14 RC5, it doesn't even start. It just shows the startup screen (before the pilot selection) and just crashes. no fs2_open.log, no nothing.  :banghead: I'll be taking lots of computer-related classes, including programming in C##, robotics (which is probably where I'll learn to debug the **** outta stuff), etc. next year so hopefully I wont be such a noob at this by then :P

Did you try to run FS2 in administrator mode? Maybe windows didn't give the debug exe the rights to create files.
At any rate, I would suggest moving your FS2 out of the program files folder. You don't even need to reinstall anything, just cut and paste the whole folder somewhere else.

Created a thread here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80191.0) regarding FS2 needing to run in administrator mode (for coders to look at; I don't think it will be much help here, but it may help you to understand some things if you like learning new things about how your Operating System works).

it's not in program files actually, it's in C:/games/freespace2

It doesn't look like you have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs installed. They're required for Blue Planet. Make sure they're located in a folder called mediavps_3612

I'm also not totally confident in your graphics card's ability to run the thing.  :(

Perhaps download and install the MediaVPs as described in the thread at the FreeSpace Upgrade Project board, but skip/delete anything that says "advanced" or "adv". That goes for Blue Planet, as well.

which is why I need my Macbook Pro up and running again   :(

I can usually get it to run at around 20-30 fps on this laptop though

Does it still function besides the optical drive?  If so, you should be able to get an external optical drive for $50-$70 on newegg.com  Get a burner, not the cheap read-only drives (in my experience, reader only drives tend to suck and break pretty fast.. writers have to have more precise control.  Even when they break down to the point where they can't write, they can read usually).  If anyone has advice on an external reader that actually works decently and lasts a while, post away, I'm all ears.

I like the Samsung external writer (USB-powered - make sure it's USB powered and half-height  [aka 'Slim'] unless you want to lug around a big case and AC adapter).

EDIT: OK, I guess you can get burners for ~$30 now.  Sweet!

actually, yeah. the whole thing is fine except for the body and drive. and my computer whiz friend just so happens to have both laying around at his house. just gotta wait for him to have the time to do it -_- (he's an orthopedic surgeon, so he is on call a LOT of the time)

Well, we've graduated to a new error, at least. This one looks like it's caused by the MVP files. I'm going to try to figure out what to do next in order to narrow down the problem.

Rest assured that BP is ordinarily completely stable when properly installed - it's a matter of figuring out what exactly went wrong.

You misunderstood the FSU release thread.

MV_Assets.vp is the root pack and MV_Assets.3612.vp is the update. But it doesn't matter, you need both.
