Title: Follow an SCP coder
Post by: Swifty on March 09, 2012, 09:21:15 am
I'm intrigued by this thing called "social media" that I decided to take advantage of it to better communicate with users of Freespace Open. I don't think I'm vain enough to have a blog but I think this at least warrants some form of microblogging.

You can follow me at http://www.twitter.com/swiftieee

I usually post general musings about the code, indicate potential future plans, think outloud about current features I'm working on, and talk about game coding in general. Basically anything that would be considered too spammy if I tried posting it here but still relevant to development of Freespace Open.

I'm currently attending GDC this week so as an added bonus, you can see how I'm going to take what I've learned this week and apply it to FSO. :D

Just think of it as me trying to add another dimension of transparency to the SCP. Feel free to ask questions through Twitter. Thoughts and comments posted by me are not necessarily representative of the SCP as a whole. ;)

I am also on twitter at https://twitter.com/#!/The_one_E

Not as informative, and a lot more random.

It's always nice to read what others, uh, tweeted.

Although currently Twitter is being slow or something, so I can't actually read Swifty's Twitter feed.

Say, Swifty, about your Twitter username, are you actually a member of the IEEE, or did you just need something to use in place of "swifty", which was presumably taken?

@Valathil: I just removed two backslashes in the codebase while sitting on the toilet

Hmm, I never really thought of it that way. Why yes, I was an officer for my university's IEEE club.

In reality, my user name is just me continuing to place "E's" until I got a valid hit. :P

You must be kidding. This IS the same community that shot down FS3 because we thought the guy was a douche.

We be fickle *****es.

Actually, we shot it down because Derek Smart really IS a douche. There's no thought required on that.

True.

I was going to refute, but I really can't without lying through my teeth.

Actually, last he came over here he was pretty well behaved until people in this community decided to start pushing his buttons.

Actually, we shot it down because Derek Smart really IS a douche. There's no thought required on that.

You know, technically that's a bannable offence since Mr Smart is a member of HLP. :p

We have a documented rule somewhere against specifically insulting other HLP members in such a manner?  And we didn't make an exception for DS?

HLP will not tolerate any posts of a racist, sexist or bigoted nature. Nor shall we tolerate any attacks of a personal nature.

From the guidelines here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=37583.0). DS isn't an active member at the moment so I'm not really worried. If he was, and he wasn't being a douche at the time, it would be ban city for the offender. It's the only way to be fair. As soon as the admins start playing favourites this place will go to hell in a hand basket. :p

I suppose I should tell people to get back on topic but given that this was basically an announcement, I've not really got any idea what would be on-topic. :p

Might be thread-lock time then.  But I guess my point was, I wasn't aware that rule was limited to only members of the community, and not any person in general, member or not.  Anyone on the outside reading the message doesn't care if Smart is a member or not, they still see any vitriol.

If we banned people every time they said someone was a <insert insult of choice here> we probably wouldn't have anyone left by the end of the month. :p Nothing racist, sexist, etc but nothing personal directed at someone who is a member seems like a fair compromise.
