Title: (SOLVED)public_www/ folder? wtf is this for?
Post by: S-99 on March 14, 2012, 08:14:05 am
Hosting is usually pretty simplistic. I do like things like advanced control panels for hosting definitely. But, the filesystem of the hosting is alien to me (whatever, the last time i hosted something was on 110mb years ago which doesn't really let you have access to the hosting accounts direct filesystem like other hosting does). I'm use to uploading files and calling it good in the past. Of course, public_html/ directory is where you put everything, but what is public_www/ for?

Just want this answer. Googling brings up a whole bunch of documentation i get to read pages of just to find out and put together. I don't have that time. Honestly, i want to go wash some dishes and clean the house for once. Aside from working all i've had time for is rearing the puppy (this dog is sadly not an award winner for intelligence...my ****ing luck...thank you gf, your dog is a dumb ****). I do want to put the dog in the microwave (caribou herding breed, not chihuaha sized).

public_www/ is usually your web-availible root space.

aka, its the folder where you put stuff, if you want it to appear at www.<insert domain name here>.com/<file name>

at least, thats usually what that folder is.

What pecenipicek said.  Any sane web hosting outfit is going to use a *NIX based server, changes are good it will be Apache, and apache doesn't care what the directory name is, it will look for the web site files in whatever directory it's been configured to look in.  Some places stick with the traditional public_html name, others will rename it.

the joys of linux, odball paths, and phonebook size man pages explaining what they are for. usually written by people who's sole goal in life is to make people bored.

You know, however, the good thing about Linux is that, if someone really wanted to they could make their own version of Linux that just made plain, simple sense... *eyeballs Nuke*  Nukenix, anyone?

It would be kind of nice if there was a group of uber-nerds that actually understood how most semi-technically oriented people think, and created a variant of Linux for that audience.

They already did this for the technically ignorant.  They call it Mac OS X.

(I'm just kidding, put the rocks away..)

Cool, i haven't had a chance to do anything yet. Doing dishes right now. Basically, there's the subdomain, and the domain for a site. I made a parked domain, and the domain name is set up properly. The host has the subdomain and domain setup for folders. Arrgh for now  :)

EDIT: Had some time to screw around with this more. Got what i needed working. Thx for the help.
