Title: PC Upgrading
Post by: headdie on March 15, 2012, 03:41:16 am
I am looking to upgrade my computer ( I actually have the money for once ) but only £130, atm I am looking at

AMD A4-3400 FM1 2.7GHz (http://www.dabs.com/products/amd-a4-3400-fm1-2-7ghz-1mb-65w-7VMB.html?refs=50521-12-4294944105&src=3) - £54.99
Gigabyte A55M-DS2 (http://www.dabs.com/products/gigabyte-a55m-ds2-amd-a55-fm1-ddr3-matx-7XB7.html?refs=473470000-11&src=3) - £41.98
KFA2 GeForce GT 520 810MHz 2GB PCI-E HDMI Low Profile (http://www.dabs.com/products/kfa2-geforce-gt-520-810mhz-2gb-pci-e-hdmi-low-profile-7PS2.html?refs=4294944469-12-55110000&src=3) - £21.99
Best Value Hypertec 2GB DDR3 PC3-10600 (http://www.dabs.com/products/best-value-hypertec-2gb-ddr3-pc3-10600-1333mhz-240pin-7VT7.html?refs=11&q=DDR3&src=16) - £7.93

Total - £126.89

Anyone have any better suggestions, I cant go over £130 though as that is all the money I have for this.

If you intend to play with the computer, my suggestion is to get a console with that money. Or save until you have at least three times as much to spend.

Got Xbox for the kids already, I am a PC person and I am upgrading from an Athlon 64 socket 754, and an AGP GF6600 GT so this is a big upgrade already.  Waiting for more money is a no go as I am lucky to have this spare at this time and not sure when I will have spare cash again.  At least with this I will be able to upgrade comparatively cheaply in the future as I will be able to do it one component at a time for a while.

My main concern is getting value for what little money i have.

Unlikely to happen, those components don't allow for much of an upgrade into a gaming rig. If you want decent options to upgrade, you're going to have to double your budget.

You'd have to start with at least Intel LGA1055 socket motherboard, even mATX, Core i3, one 4GB RAM stick so that you can later get another one as mATX boards usually only have two RAM slots. And then the best GPU you can afford. AMD Radeon offers best bang for the buck in low to mid range of cards.

If doubling the budget is not an option, save the money to buy xbox games unless you really need to upgrade the PC for other reasons than gaming.

2gb isn't likely going to cut it with a llano chip. It has a built-in gpu which shares ram with the cpu, thats the whole point of buying llano in the first place.

ditch the 520 and get 4gb of PC-12800 (DDR3-1600) (http://www.dabs.com/products/kingston-4gb--2x2gb--hyperx-ddr3-1600mhz-dimm-xmp-x2-cl9--genesis-special-edition-grey--79XL.html?refs=468490000-418700000-475090000-42670000&src=2) ram instead. The extra speed will help the gpu out, when you get more money later, get a stonger gpu down the line. Perhaps one that will crossfire with the llano gpu.

Otherwise find an Athlon II that will take the FM1 socket (they do exist) and possibly save some money that way.

If I go Athlon II would I be better going Socket AM3 then?

Yes, since AM3 actually has an upgrade path. FM1 dies when trinity (llano's successor) comes out.
