Title: OT: The DMCA
Post by: an0n on June 04, 2002, 02:02:36 pm
I found this on winamp and thought it was quite amusing. The linked fingerprint article's also very interesting:

The staple of the DMCA's enforcement crippled by a simple felt-tip.
And the supposedly most secure method of user identification screwed over by some sweets, super-glue fumes and a PCB.

Yeah, this is fairly hilarious - not to mention the new "secure" British notes that were released a few weeks ago, then recalled a week later after it was found the registration number could be rubbed off...

Even with all this new-fangled technologicalizing they still can't beat the superb copy-protection of a simple code list. Like on MegaTraveller2 where it goes "How far is it from Ribos to Vega?", you get yer little bright-yellow (hard to scan) planets table, look up Ribos, run down to Vega and type in the 3 digit number. Nice, simple, effective.

Oh and BTW, the EUCD (Europen Union Copyright Directive) is to be implemented into the laws of all EU member states shortly. It's exactly the same as the DMCA and there's not a damm thing we can do about it. Natarally Tony Blair, a huge respector of civil liberties, will adopt it as strictly as possible so you get longer in the big house for downloading an mp3 than you do for robbing OAPs: sickening. Can everyone say 1984?

You get 25 years for impersonating a police officer and 20 for beating an old lady to death with a bleep covered bleep and burrying her under a slide at the local park. Now THAT's stupid.

Anyway, crap like the DMCA and EUCD will never be enforced. As long as you're not selling thousands of copies of Spiderman on pirated DVD's, no-one cares.

It was more to help you from getting in hot water. Anyway i think felt tip pens should be banned, they are dangerous tools.

Tell that to Dimitry Skylarov (Advanced E-Book Reader project member) and John Johnsen (De CSS writer)
