Title: Backdrop
Post by: 3,14 on March 19, 2012, 11:28:30 pm
Hello to everyone, I'm new here, and thought maybe I could contribute to this project in way. I've made some planets and a sun some time ago in Blender, maybe you could use them as background objects? In any case you have my permission to use them if you like. The Blender files for the two planets are lost, so you'd have to take them as they are now. As for the sun, there is also an animated version (see www.vimeo.com/38826513), maybe for use as an animated texture?
Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.

Those look very cool !

But I think this belongs more to the Celestial object thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=41939.0), as they could be used in every mod, not only FoTG. Just sayin'

Just a small update, the sun animation (have I mentioned it is an animation?) is now looping, has 500 frames at 512x512 pixels and was rendered with an alpha channel.
Anybody feel free to use it if you like:

If there is interest I can also render a longer and bigger version (like here http://vimeo.com/38826513)

Oh boy. FSO has some serious problems with large-framecount animations - namely they eat up all the slots in BMPMAN and lead to texture corruption across the entire mission. I don't know if this is a big issue for FotG or even with this animation, I just know it's been a huge problem with detailed explosion animations.

Entire mission? Try the entire game, until you restart FSO. It's especially bad if you enable caching bitmaps between missions. One animation with 500 frames shouldn't be problem, but two of them might, so be careful with it.

Ah, I see. Well, nothing doing, I can hardly make it any shorter without noticing the repetition (500 frames is too short anyway).

It should be fine. Besides, it's a background. Most people won't be looking at it and admiring it for long enough to notice the repetition.

Let me reinforce that even with technical issues you are still awesome and this is cool.

That was never a subject of discussion. Of course it's really cool and I wish the BMPMAN had more slots so it could easily fit. But it might be too awesome for this game, which did happen before (Nighteyes' explosions).

In the Freespace-Wiki, in the paragraph about animated textures it reads:

Effect textures:
Textures are also used in weapon bitmaps, explosions, background nebulas and planets, glow points and so on.

So I presume yes.
