Title: Want to play, but some issues just came out
Post by: shadowman2011 on March 27, 2012, 08:58:23 pm
Hi,

I just downloaded blue planet and I was about to play, but I faced some issues and I am now seeking some help from you guys. On welcome screen FS2 says that it has found more than 50 problems, I don't know why, but that is what it says. So I was able to view the first movie, but then the game crashed. I open the debug version and as soon as a click run the game crashed.

I am pretty sure you guys can help me and I cannot wait to play it looks so interesting.

Thank you guys for your help.

Here is the log.

You need to have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs installed in a folder located in your FreeSpace 2 dir and called mediavps_3612 in order for Blue Planet to work.

If there are any more problems please let us know, we can fix them.

I have them. C://Games/Freespace2/Mediavps_3612.
There are 2 folders and 4 files.
Folders: Mediavps and data.
Files: FSU-MVP.bmp, mod.ini, readme.txt and settings.ini

What do I do know?

You should have a bunch of .vp files as well as those ones. e.g.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Advanced.vp' with a checksum of 0x4b8b0f5a
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_AnimGlows.vp' with a checksum of 0x6a554026
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Assets.3612.vp' with a checksum of 0x59649c21
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Assets.vp' with a checksum of 0x529cc70f
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Effects.3612.vp' with a checksum of 0x9c510aa0
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Effects.vp' with a checksum of 0xb9a9a485
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Music.vp' with a checksum of 0xb3e21469
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_RadarIcons.vp' with a checksum of 0x31dd7781
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Root.3612.vp' with a checksum of 0x7c9d7e74
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\MediaVPs_3612\MV_Root.vp' with a checksum of 0x6ffd5c78

I think you only downloaded the 1st file, you need at least MV_Root_3612.zip and MV_Root_Update.zip (and all the others if you want more prettiness)

I had them, but inside a folder called mediavps within mediavps itself. Anyway I took them out and it is so beautiful.
I started playing already and it is so cool, but I found that my computer slows down when I'm in front of capital ships or big fighting situations. Any suggestion?

Get a better computer?

You could also try to remove the MediaVPs_3612\MV_Advanced.vp and blueplanet\bp-adv-visuals.vp files - they may affect performance on lower end PCs.

Just to make sure--you downloaded in the last couple of days, rather than downloaded a few months ago and just got to playing now, right? Because there was an update a few months ago that greatly optimized a couple UEF ships. The game was a slideshow for a lot of people before that.

Also, you could switch to an SSE or SSE2 build if you're not using one already. They can help performance on some systems. Go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70692.0) for the 3.6.12 SSE builds or here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80021.0) for the 3.6.14 RC5 SSE builds.

FTFY  ;)

Anything released 2005 ish (And a great deal of 2003+) systems should have SSE2... For non-SSE, you'd have to be using something 2001-2002 I think.  SSE came out in 1999, SSE2 in 2001, in Intel Pentium processors.  AMD licensed SSE in most of its processors shortly afterward (the Athlon has it) as well as SSE2 (the Athlon XP doesn't have it, but the Athlon 64 does).

This is all AFAIK; if I've made a mistake, feel free to correct me, but it looks like, unless you have a really old system, you should be using an SSE2 build... it doesn't hurt to try them, anyways, just grab an SSE2 build, try it, if it doesn't work, grab an SSE build, if not, well, there you go, non-SSE builds are for you until you get a more modern system.  :)

OK, here is the deal. I don't know why is it going like that, but this is my computer specs.

AMD Phenom X38450 Triple-core processor
4GB system memory
Nvidia Geforce 9100 Integrated  graphics
Joystick: Logitech Attack 3
It is a dual boot system with Windows and Ubuntu.

I tried to play FS on Ubuntu, but I had so many issues with the joystick, out nowhere the joystick froze in one position and it just turns around and around and every time I exited the game the screen went black and I had to hard reboot my PC, which it hurts me because I might damage it. Anyway I looked for help over the internet, on sectorgame.com someone suggested that was a problem with Ubuntu. Ubuntu help services did not answer my question and neither linuxquestions.org, that took me about 2 weeks, so I gave up finding help and I ended up installing Windows 7 ultimate just to play FS (I really hate Windows).

I also opened my computer inside at 3 am today, couldn't sleep, and cleaned it inside with a can of compress air. It was dusty, it didn't make any difference on the issue.

I am using fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF_SSE2.exe and I am going to re-download the mediavps to see if that helps also I am going to try to find an upgrade for the Nvidia graphics driver.

I'll report later.

Nvidia Geforce 9100 Integrated  graphics
There's the problem. Integrated graphics aren't really designed for gaming, and WiH is a pretty resource-intensive game.

You'll need a new graphics card. :( Do you have a desktop?

I tried to play FS on Ubuntu...
Did you compile fs2 open along with launcher, or run Windows builds with Wine? Precompiled Linux builds are quite useless for me (Fedora 16 KDE, many errors) and I believe it would be the same for you. My Cyborg X works on Linux without any problems...

I thought that WiH doesn't like 3.6.12...  :nervous:

Well, WiH doesn't like .12 indeed. Grab .14 RC5. Note that those builds also have a bunch of optimizations, so it might just run more smoothly for you. Hard to tell if it will make any difference for an integrated card though.

So, is it better to grab a new graphics card or should I get a new computer right away?

Yes, I compile fs2 open and the launcher. It worked pretty good for a while.

Oh boy, that's a tricky question. How much do you want to spend?

I got 300 CAN for this wound. In the end, i bought this computer in 2009, so it is getting old. I don't really want to spend a lot. I prefer to get a new one. So just give me some choices since you guys know more than I do about graphic cards.

Why don't you just buy a really good card now and later, when you get the new computer, put it over into that new one.
In the vast majority of cases (at least over here in central Europe) you pay less money if you buy the components rather than a complete pre-build system anyway, even if you include the small fee for the shop to assemble it, if you don't want to or can't do that yourself.

Anyway... with my "old" GeForce 9800 GTX I could play through BP2 just fine (even back in the un-optimized and .12 days). That card generation and it's equals should be old enough to cost very little these days, if you really just want a stopgap solution for the moment. For the mentioned card I found prices between € 80,- and € 120,- (though I don't know how much that would be in Canadian Dollar) and I imagine the Radeon equivalents will cost roughly the same.
