Title: Naval War: Arctic Circle
Post by: The E on April 03, 2012, 12:56:09 pm
So, there's this naval warfare sim that's been flying kinda under the radar called Naval War: Arctic Circle (http://www.navalwargame.com/), and it's coming out on April 10th.

I am so going to buy it, if only because I always wanted to play one of those Harpoon-like games. Anyone else here going to get it?

I am particularly pumped for being able to order Kirovs and Kuznetsovs around. Russian ships is best ships.

Definitely reminiscent of Janes' Fleet Command :)

Looks interesting indeed.

3d Harpoon!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I think I will indeed have me some of that. Some of my happiest childhood memories were of pummeling Keflavic and sinking carrier groups in the GIUK battleset. Damn that takes me back!

There are still times I wake up screaming from that dream.

It looks good. Hopefully, it'll be cheaper than Harpoon.

I'm really saddened this isn't available from Steam or some other distributor I'd actually recognize.

Heard about this one a while back. Never thought it'd be released so soon, though! Seems like it'd be a good companion for Wargames: European Escalation in terms of style.

I'm going to wait for some reviews, though. Last few games published by Paradox have been glitch-ridden messes indicative of being thrown out to release far too early.

It's out, relatively cheap on Steam, but there's so little commentary on it that I don't know if it's worth $19.99.

TotalBiscuit did a feature on it at one show or another while it was still in development, so hopefully he'll do a WTF is... soon. Say what you will about him, his first impressions are generally quite informative.

In other news, Matrix Games is selling Ultimate Harpoon (all the Harpoons ever) for the typically overinflated Matrix Games price of seventy dollars.

They can go **** right off.

Well, there's a Demo out for the game on Steam, which is nice. It also sold me on the game, and so I own it now, because it is pretty enjoyable.

After watching Battleship last night...there are no battleships included aren't they?

No, it's set in the far-off year of 2030; Battleships have long since gone the way of the Dinosaur. The closest equivalent would probably be the russian Kirov-class BC or american Ticonderoga-class CG.

No Zumwalt-Class in there, then?

Not as far as I can tell, but then they have dropped pretty big in-story hints about a possible Pacific War expansion

Oh, I see thought this was just a cold war game, but if it's set in 2030...ok...no battleships justified, although they were retrofitted 40 years ago...^^

I bought this game a couple of days ago after liking the demo pretty well. It REALLY, really needs an SDK release and a mission editor/creator, though. The scenarios are somewhat disappointing in certain ways, like CVGBs with no sub escort and out of the range of ground-based air cover, when the level clearly has airfields and subs...just in the wrong place. I'd never send out a carrier without attack subs escorting it.

Invariably, having a mission where I have a CVBG on one side of the map and subs on the other, helis have to do all the ASW work, and the enemy has an uncanny ability to know exactly where my subs are almost right at the beginning of the mission thanks to helis that pop out of literally nowhere. If the subs were near my CVBG, like they should have been, those flies would have been swatted out of the air with SAMs long before they caught a sniff.

Missile defenses are almost TOO competent, too; but that's just a small issue.

I'd love to see an SDK release just for the possibility of a WWII mod and battleships slugging it out.
