http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-04-05/one-tonne-feathered-dino-was-cousin-of-t-rex/3934050
So, I'd gotten used to the idea of feathered Dromaeosaurs after all these chinese feathered things coming out of Liaoning. I don't like it - in my mind they've gone from awesome looking killer lizards to non-threatening, kinda ridiculous looking birds (after all, who's ever been scared of an Emu?) - but science marches on, fact displaces misconception, new evidence overturns old ideas. That's science, it's what we do. Even that little tiny feathered tyrannosaurid from China wasn't a big deal, because it was tiny.
But I'd always been able to hang on to the idea that the really big ones were gigantothermic, and that feathers would have been a detriment (i.e. they still looked badass). We even have skin impressions from T. rex showing big reptillian scales. And now this thing comes along, and throws it all out of kilter. Oh, sure, it lived in what would have been cold climates back then. But that's not important. What matters is that it's going to affect every drawing of these animals for the next twenty years. Every single theropod will be covered in big stupid looking protofeathers (witht he possible exception of spinosaurus, since it's bloody hard to ignore that great big sail). And there goes the last generation of kids to think dinosaurs were really awesome. :(

It had to be done.

And then there's the matter of China's fake fossils (http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1888548,00.html)... I read a more recent article on it too, but can't find that one.

Don't know about you, but I'd probably be pretty scared if I suddenly saw a giant, ton-and-a-half mountain of muscle, beak and feathers in front of me :)
Or for anyone who's played Monkey Island 3.. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbBJ-iBkDNc)

Sorry.

I don't know about "scared" but having one look you in the eye is a little un-nerving, which is why I would then chase it off. :p

Yes, the pure evilness of its long dead ancestors can be clearly seen in those eyes... :p

Sweet Jesus on a pogo stick! I check for recent replies and a ****ING DEMON EYED BEAST stares at me!
Kill it with fire!
And then make it into a burger.
A cheeseburger.
With fries.

I think it may be time for me to have lunch.

Emu is, for the record, bloody lovely and you should eat it if you ever get a chance, cheeseburger or no.
-
I know. I once had an Emu burger from an aussie pub called the 'Walkabout'. I also had a bite of a kangaroo burger, but wasn't too keen on it.
-
Kangaroo's hard to get right, and even then, not for everyone. Can be a bit gamey. But done right, it is really nice, and good for you to boot.
-
I want to eat some Yutyrannus meat.
Somebody resurrect it so I can know what it tastes like! :U

like chicken most likely.
