I just noticed that the forum profile settings currently allow you to choose an avatar. Since my understanding was that regular users can't have avatars (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60553.0), has there been a change in policy, or is this just an accidental consequence of the recent issues with the HLP Theme?
-
Might be a user-group issue, because I don't have the option (at least not that I can find.)
-
Me neither. Me jelly.

Ugh. Whoever set up the [REDACTED] group set it as a unique group instead of deriving from Regular Members. As a result it has all kinds of incorrect permissions.
I can fix it, but first I need to know whether this was a mistake or intentional -- and if the latter, then what is different from Regular Members in this group.

There aren't supposed to be any differences. Please fix this problem by repairing Regular Members to have [REDACTED] access.

Does this mean I won't be getting a 9 foot tall, remote controlled blue person?

:banghead:
i didn't say what i thought and i didn't thought about what i've said. Infact, it's too late in the evening to think or speak.

Fixed. Also, thread redacted by request.
Incidentally, those worried about accidental membership leakage on this thread should be more worried about the fact that the [REDACTED] membergroup had security holes ever since it was created. :p
-
Whoops! Sorry, I didn't even think about that.
-
I'm pretty sure when I set up that group I DID set it to derive from Regular Members in fact. I set it to inherit from Regular Members. That's the default setting and I can't think why I would have changed it. Should I have set it to be based off of Regular Members instead?
-
In fairness, they are oddly named. One is called "Inherit From" and one is called "Based On", which are almost synonyms. But "Inherit From" (the correct setting) simply references the permissions whereas "Based On" copies them wholesale.
But you must have edited it somehow, because even if the Regular Members permissions were copied, that group doesn't allow the user to select an avatar.
You can check the membergroup inheritance at a glance here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=admin;area=permissions). The vast majority of groups should be in that Regular Members list. Only certain special groups should appear in their own row.
-
Do you remember what it was set to before you fixed it? I'm pretty sure I've never seen that group on its own row before.
As for the difference between the two, that's exactly what I figured the difference would be, but then since the SMF admin interface was obviously designed by drunken monkeys, I wasn't certain. :p

It was definitely on its own row, with its own set of permissions. And it had the "Based On" option selected. I didn't go look through every single permission, but in addition to the "allow avatar" setting it was also set up to display the membergroup name under the user if set as a primary membergroup.

Yup. For all its other flaws, VBulletin was much better in this regard.

Why are avatars restricted?
-
It's a restriction that has been around since forever, in order to reduce the visual clutter (Same reason why you don't get images in signatures). Avatars are a priviledge reserved for admins, so that we can tell them apart from regular users easily.

Which IMO is as unnecessary as colored posts.

He turned it in, he's a man of principle!

You're being silly if you thought I "lost" it. I stopped using avatars long before I quit being an admin.
I think the last time I used an avatar was when I temporarily changed my nick to "Furry" and set my avatar to pedobear that had HLP logo on its belly, like those care bears.

Which, by the way, was awesome.
