Title: LMDE update pack 4 is officially out. Official isos out.
Post by: S-99 on April 10, 2012, 03:42:25 pm
Update instructions here here (http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1949).
Official isos here (http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1979).

LMDE is linux mint, but based upon debian instead of a crappy ubuntu base (the result typically is superior stability). LMDE is also a rolling release (in this case, a semi rolling release, they release update packs).

They set it up so you can keep your gnome 2 desktop if you are going the update route. If not sticking with gnome 2, go ahead and update and you'll get the fork of gnome 2 which is called MATE which works great in my opinion.

If not updating, they have fresh new isos with update pack 4 included that come in xfce and MATE/Cinnamon 32 and 64 bit versions of each.

Thoughts on cinnamon...
Cinnamon is pointless as all hell and runs slow. I don't see the point of cinnamon with it essentially trying to replicate the MATE desktop environment with the bird **** glue and underpinnings called gnome 3. Why is 3d acceleration a requirement for a 2d desktop? Who the **** knows, and you can't turn it off (thanks gnome 3, that would fix the speed problem on a netbook).

Cinnamon is still a work in progress, gnome 3 which is a non task oriented desktop that can be made into a task oriented desktop. I say how much lipstick can we put on that pig?

Linux Mint Debian Edition. I've been trying the normal Mint, and its not half bad. Sadly, i'm a hardcore gentoo man at heart, yet gentoo looks like its dying a very slow death.

I wanted to test the new iso's that are release candidates still. I installed cinnamon/mate 64 bit. It works fine, no different than upgrading to update pack 4 on a normal system i tried that on. Cinnamon is lacking in the area of customizability like screen saver, power settings, and stuff like that.

Any 3rd-party add-ons to do that for you available yet?

Perhaps there is. But, i'm not really interested in cinnamon anymore. It was fun, but it runs slowly and eats too much ram for otherwise the same kind of desktop that MATE is. Well, the new isos are mate and cinnamon, so this is easy to cure.

MATE is a pretty good fork of gnome 2. I could spot some differences that haven't been integrated yet (like the usual gconf-editor areas that i always pull changes too or that those have been renamed). Nothing more than that really.

Gnome 3 is the reason I'm using the KDE mint release right now.

So far, it's good. I like it and stuff.

I'm on the MATE desktop now. Oh man, that was an easy fix. I just selected to login with MATE instead of cinnamon. I feel better.

Also, who knows how well the mint team can turn a non task oriented desktop into a task oriented desktop (gnome 3). From what i saw, it can be done, it just sucks though.
