HD trailer for those unconvinced (http://youtu.be/F-FpduXstLE?hd=1)
Free to play shooter developed by Zombie, being published by Perfect World Entertainment (blugh :ick: ). Really sweet game, all I really play in my free time now.
It has some pretty unique features, including a customization system that far outstrips that of any other FPS game. Other things include the depot system, which lets players spend points they accrue over the course of a match to call in heavy weapons like flamethrowers, rockets, turrets, and even 10 foot tall mech suits, as well as the Hyper Reality Visor, which allows you to survey the battlefield with X-ray vision.
My in game name is CobaltWolf if anyone wants to play.
Sorry for this being the first thing I post after coming back :P Feel like an adbot.

Sell me on this over Tribes Ascend

HLP is busy playing another Perfect World game called Star Trek Online, so it isn't that much of a dirty word around here. :P
If it is as fun as you say it is, I may play if I ever get the urge to do online FPS ever again. Mindless CoD-style shooting is fun every now and then.

You don't need to grind so much for XP in order to unlock stuff. Other than that, I cannot really argue against Tribes, having not played it. For me, this just came first, so when Tribes started rolling out the ads and such, I was sorta 'meh'. They're really direct competitors. I'd suggest just taking the time to try it out.

It looks nice, problem is, I'm really really bored with FPS these days...

I forgot to ask a vital question. How much real money will we have to shell out to access this game's features?

Glad you asked. All things that affect gameplay can be bought with the in-game cash. The only things that you need to pay ZEN for are camouflage, which doesn't really matter since your name appears over your head, taunts, etc. A gun part costs 3275 GP, and you get ~150 GP per match. Compared to a lot of F2P FPS games, that's pretty lenient. I've been told that Tribes has things unlock at hundreds of thousands of XP points, and you only get 100 or so a match?
Pricing is 3275 GP for a gun part (Muzzle, barrel, optics, magazine, stock) 5500 GP for a receiver (Currently start with Assault Rifle and 9mm Pistol, and can buy SMG, Burst Rifle, Combat Rifle, Bolt Action Rifle, LMG, Heavy Assault Rifle, .45 Cal Pistol, Burst Pistol, Shotgun, and Machine Pistol, with the Tactical SMG, Auto Shotgun, and Dart gun on the way) ~7500 GP for certain items like armor pieces, and other things I can't remember, and 11K GP for tactical equipment (basically the way you differentiate your role on the team. Stuff like health injector, repair tool, barricades, revive injector, cloak, etc).
Additionally, all GP items can be rented for 1, 3, 7, and 30 day intervals, with flat pricing (3 days is the 1 day price times 3) which really helps when you're testing out new loadouts and items.
Admittedly, those looking to buy parts with ZEN are going to be screwed over a bit. A part for your gun costs $5 at the moment, since PWE sets the pricing (again, blugh). But really, if you enjoy playing the game, it's easy to get the GP to perm parts, and you're not screwed over like in AVA where it's impossible to buy guns with euros (in game cash).

I've already got a Perfect World account from playing Rusty Hearts and Star Trek Online, so I guess I could give this a try.

:bump:
I got into this yesterday, It's good fun, the seting and style is awesome. Tribes just beats it on the whole Tribes feel - skiing and jetpacking. But it's a whole lot easier to earn XP on this, I already bought two guns after less than half a dozen matches.
Dobbsy FYI
The soundtrack just makes me spooge too.

maybe i'll try it out and see how long it stays fun before falling to pay to win.
is the programming a piece of **** like every other free to play game i've tried?
-
Runs like a dream on a five year old system. (medium detail)
-
i was thinking more along the lines of awful mechanics, show stopping bugs, and general sloppy design more than performance.
-
Well, it basically plays like Call of Duty with dubstep and OP battle armors.
-
Yeah I know, it's like they made COD awesome. I NEEEEED some of those neon/laser/holographic taunts though. Half my XP/in game cash comes from taunting within 3 secs of killing people. Plus it'd be soooooo much cooler when i'm on the win screen to be all JAWS-y.
-
the fact that you can custom specify each component group of your weapons and different armour components to your taste is very cool. So not just take an M4 and add bits to it like in cod, but you can specify the receiver type, barrel, stock, mag, sighting, flash hider/suppressor, and I am sure if forgot a few bits and most of them have some effect on the weapon's performance.

I have it as well and I really do like it, just waiting for the devs to come out the next patch.
PS. My Username in BLR (if you interested) is OmniSphere33
