Just found this, Scientists from the University of Dundee have taken inspiration from doctor who and created a "working sonic screwdriver".
"Physicists at the University of Dundee used equipment designed for MRI-guided ultrasound surgery and created a tool that can lift and spin a 10cm rubber disk with an ultrasound beam.
The team said the beam carries momentum that can push an object in its path and can cause the object to rotate when shaped like a helix or vortex.
Like Doctor Who's own device, our sonic screwdriver is capable of much more than just spinning things around."

Lol, First scientists say the idea of the Cybermen is no longer fiction and that we could end up like them one day. Then they make a sonic screwdriver. I wonder how long it is before a dalek comes along lol

It'd be nice if there was an actual demo of how it worked, or at least a picture of the item itself. I kind of feel like they're 21 days late in announcing this.
Assuming it can generate enough force to work properly, does it only work in one direction or both?
And can it open digital locks?
