Title: All MS live.com users READ (Hotmail, Live.com, XBOX online users..)
Post by: jr2 on April 26, 2012, 12:34:33 am
FYI:

FYI, SkyDrive offers existing users 25GB for free. You need to go claim that by logging into SkyDrive, there is a notification link on top of the page. New users are stuck with free 7GB.

If you didn't notice it from my previous post, SkyDrive now also offers similar sync app to Dropbox and GDrive. It's also available to Mac, WinPhone and iPhone. No Android app yet unfortunately.
I wish I had known that M$ was axing SkyDrive down to 7GB.  They say 7GB covers 98% of users?  What they are trying to say is that the top 2% of new free users need to go pay up instead now.  :P  If it was really that small of a percentage, I don't think MS would have any problem keeping 25GB storage for everyone, as 98% would not use it.

My GDrive isn't ready yet.

I think I'll get a SkyDrive.

I've already got a Dropbox.

EDIT: OK, if you are an existing MS Live user (hotmail or live.com account, I think XBOX online users will have a live.com account) then you can get 25GB if you sign in now.

Now would be the time to dig up your old hotmail account that you used to use for registering on sites.  Go to www.skydrive.com , log in, and upgrade your storage.  (If you want it, anyways.)

For the time I've used Skydrive, I have to say it was useful to posting up junk to the internet without paying somebody to host it for me.

But, once I got a taste of FTP's, I have to say that Skydrive utterly sucks compared to it, since I find FTP's far easier to work with.

Thanks for the heads up though.

FTP is also insecure, since connections are not encrypted, not even username and password. You'd nee sftp or ftps if you want to use them instead of Dropbox/Skydrive/GDrive.

It's all just email to me. Don't look at me. I've had decent email usage with hotmail (now known as live also) for years.

Thank you for posting this - I have no idea when I might possibly need to upload 25 gigs of stuff to the net, but at least I can keep that free storage granted to me so long ago now, now. :D

I personally use SkyDrive all the time. I've never got it to host files properly (even though I do that from time to time), but I generally use it to upload images and thus host them. For a while, MS had a really crappy image linking system, but that seems to be fixed now (or rather, back to normal). However, given the complaints of some people about this issue, perhaps I should use DA more often...

Am I the only one who didn't understand the point of launching the SkyDrive application when there's a little something called Live Mesh which has more features?

Oh. Apparently I needed to not just be a member, but I had to use it previously by having files uploaded before the 22nd.
That. Is absolute bull****.

Contact tech support and ask them why your files uploaded January 12th aren't there.  Tell them you have a backup, it's just really inconvenient.  Oh, and why can't you upgrade your account?  Your friends all say that you need to upgrade now and you can't.  ;)

That's odd, because I was able to upgrade my SkyDrive on my Hotmail account and I don't recall ever using it before for that account.

Did you ever upload images, not just files? Your album is located on SkyDrive as well, you know.

I store junk. Lots and lots of junk. Also, my beams. (https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=78EECE80A0658C61)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll get the free expansion just because. :)
