Title: Dark Reign: The Future of War - Imperium/Freedom Guard Fleets
Post by: Sarafan on May 05, 2012, 05:30:29 pm
I'll be honest with this, a few months ago I got bored and decided to play a RTS called Dark Reign again, one of my favorites. For those that never heard of it, wikipedia answers it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Reign:_The_Future_of_War

Its a very good game for a RTS fan and you should give try if you're a fan of the genre but I disgress. Ever since I learned how to use google sketchup now every time I play a sci fi game a voice in the back of my head goes like this "Hey why dont you model that ship?" and before that since I've been a long time fan of FS Open that voice goes together with the other voice that says "Hey a mod for FS of this would be awesome!".

So I did one ship.

Then I did another.

And another.

And another.

And I'm still doing them. The hell is wrong with me? Is this how mods are born? By driving people mad?

I'll start with something simple.

Cygnus Automated Sentry Gun - The first line of defense for the majority of installations in human space, the Cygnus is a average product from the Fujikawa Zaibatsu that exhibits moderate capabilities for a comparatively modest price. Its biggest selling point is that it mounts two Cray Mark 19 laser cannons, the standard weapon of space warfare and a big step above the powered down lasers of its competitors's sentry guns on the market. That allows the Cygnus to discourage smaller pirate or rebel ships from making a mistake but against anything bigger than that it requires numbers.

Next: Sol defence satellite

Sol Defence Satellite - Also manufactured by the Fujikawa Zaibatsu, the Sol Defence Satellite is the big brother of the Cygnus Automated Sentry Gun. Like the Cygnus, it is found defending most installations in human space, however, unlike the Cygnus the Sol is not an "average" product. Sol defence satellites have been at the top of the market of fixed defensive satellite and Fujikawa's number #1 for years and the reason for its success are two simple attributes. Overwhelming firepower and superior armor.

There are currently four versions of the Sol. The civillian or standard version is the most common and the basis of all others. Its armament is comprised of two twin capital laser turrets supported by 4 capital missile launchers which give the Solenough firepower to challenge a cruiser, against smaller targets the Sol is equipped with 28 defensive turrets consisting of laser turrets, flechette flak cannons and anti-fighter beam weapons. For protection the Fujikawa Zaibatsu spared no expense and armored the Sol with thorium-arcanite armor.

The next most common version is the one used by the Imperial military and it's essentially the same as the standard save for the addition of four triple light plasma cannons that enhance the satellite's firepoweragainst corvettes and capital ships. The next version is the one used by the Freedom Guard and it consists mostly of stolen or salvaged imperial or civillian satellites patchworked into use, it is mostly identical to the Imperial version since it adds 4 general purporse double rail turrets. The last and the most uncommon is the one used by the Tograns, this version also adds four weapons but of an unknow type and it has been observed that the laser cannons are significantly more powerful than before.

Do you plan to texture and POF them at some point?

After I learn how to do both, sure. Do you know of any good tutorials to learn them?

Great models. I just hope they won't end up abandoned in a modeldump, untextured.

This one is also based on a Star wars ship but from SW Legacy.

Enormous blind spot, ho!
I'd hate to be anything in the 90 degree cone ahead of it though.

Yeah, it has a big blind spot but it can turn itself to face the enemy.

I dig the concept. Now that is the kind of original design I like.

Assuming those cheese graters are VLSes, it should be able to fire it's torpedoes even at ships in it's blind spot. It's a kind of ship that would actually work with 360 degree FOV for VLSes.

Could you please try UVmapping and texturing one of these...
Too many people just spit out these crazy models and never finish them, it's depressing.

I agree. I really wish to see all these awesome models get into FSO. But, when I look at these there may be a few too many rotating turrets for some of these models to work how they are. :(
