I feel the urge to applaud Randall for that.

I haven't kept up with XKCD in a while, but this was indeed very much worth seeing. :)

And I thought that was rather clever myself

I dunno, I'm pretty sure it fits the "physics slowed down with trees rocks on top" description at least as well as geography. :)

BRB, counting parens and semicolons.

I was wondering why Randall said geography there instead of geology -- seems better suited.

*****es got nothing on astronomy, though astrology talk does indeed make me cringe.

I'm supposed to be choosing my major right now. This isn't exactly filling me with confidence. :p

the number of miserable engineers at MIT is perhaps not significantly different from the number of miserable [major] at MIT, but it is at least worthy of investigation. it's more important to find a major you actually want to do

Misery during your college years can lead to less stressful jobs with higher salaries than you'd get with the fun degrees. At least that's how it's worked for me... :nervous:

What are 'fun degrees'

By which I mean the degrees that require a minimum of effort, thus allowing lots of free time and such like.

I don't think that's a trait of a degree, that's a trait of a student. You can probably get away with it more in some degrees, but working your ass off is going to pay in nearly any field. Psych is a great example: you can get solid grades with minimal effort and even slouch through an RA position, but if you want to make money, you're going to be in there analyzing fMRI voxel fields and cursing at Bayesian stats alongside the neuro guys.

Well granted, working hard will almost always benefit you more than... not working hard. I'm saying the degree to which you can not work hard and still get your degree is higher with like say... a business degree versus a hard science or engineering degree. I'm sure someone could work hard at either of those and then go on to excel in whatever career. The amount of effort that would coast you through the business department on to a mediocre career would probably see you crash and burn and get kicked out of the engineering department. At least at the school I went to. Also, I'm biased. :p

I didn't exactly work hard at my physics degree by the end, and I somehow managed to scrape by...but that's a whole other story, and I've already derailed this thread enough. :p

What you really do not want in this economy is a student loan and nothing to show for it but a mediocre BA degree.
