Title: Your Desktops
Post by: Fineus on June 07, 2002, 09:45:45 am
Lets make it more interesting - ripping it completely out of The Bar but who cares... here's my desk top :D

1: Curtains...falling down.
2: Various stickers I've found on my travels.
3: My other desktop. Complete with Tool eye.
4: Cambridge Soundworks speakers... ph34r.
5: Standard Keyboard... slightly dirty.
6: MS Optical Intellimouse.
7: I'm to lazy to switch CD jewel cases all the time. It's easier with them in arms reach on the side of the desk. In this shot is Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within, Spaced Series 2, Three Kings and IW2.
8: The desk.
9: Natural Lightâ„¢.
10: Footrest, and on the left of it a bin.
12: "Please Keep Off The Grass" poster.
13: Cupboards. This one has all my old plastic kits in it.
14: Wooden DVD/CD racks are A1!
15: Lava Lamp... woooo...
16: US Robotics Modem (Bloody UK phones...)
17: Misc CDs.
18: My baby/computer. Sides removed for cooling.
19: Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold. Rocks.
20: Lunch.
21: College timetable... for rapid reference.
22: Drawers. Keep stuff.
23: Big. Black. Chair of Comfort.
24: Epson 1240 Scanner.

And of course, the more important one ;)

thats a batch to restart windows, without restarting the computer. Saves time, and is good when PC shutdown is problematic.

Good ol' ****ty ol' Windows 2000 NT-oid, and my current project set- the 3DS MAX version of my Titan, and a gigantic alien thingy. It really doesn't show, but the giant alien thingy is a few hundred Titan-lengths from the Titan, which is itself supposed to be maybe a mile... I always put up whatever the latest somewhat cool-looking WIP I have as my desktop, whenever I get bored.

Command Anti-Virus. The single best AV product ever. And it doesn't hurt that I got my copy free from a Comp-Shopper offer. It's got advanced heuristic scanning, dynamic virus protection and whole heap of other crap. As soon as a virus is detected it'll freeze the computer and pop-up a window, then it'll isolate the file and prevent anything from accessing it until it's been cleaned. It kicks so much ass.

25 icons? Hah! real men have as few icons as possible, knowing full well that a cluttered desktop saps system resources - same as having a BMP set as a background. JPEGs baby ;)

Oh yeah, JPEGs for backgrounds rule. Nevermind the fact that JPEGs are actually drawn on the desktop via ActiveDesktop, an IE component, and. .
[glow=pink]ActiveDesktop is Flamingly Ghey![/glow]
This extra component, having been loaded, takes up RAM and CPU cycles. Meanwhile, Explorer supports BMP files natively.

Yeah, that's why I use bmp desktops now.  Don't need windows taking up more resources than it already has to.

And where did you get that pic?  Looks like some kind of globe generator or something.

I mean't jpegs set as backgrounds - which by definition makes them bitmaps but far smaller than an original bitmap might have been. Optimisation is A1.

As for your background... updates every 5 minutes? And you talk of not wasting resources

I think you missed the point. A bmp takes up more memory, we all know that, but using a jpg background requires an entire additional (sub)program running, so a bmp effectively takes up less resources.

Nonono - I know that, what I mean is that a JPEG be optimised then converted to Bitmap. The result being a smaller bitmap and therefore as much optimisation as possible. This doesn't always work but it has for me in the past (got the desktop part of windows running that little bit faster with a little BMP than a large one - file size that is...

Hey smack ass, I'm not as anal about wasting resources as you are. Besides, there are two different resorces. RAM and CPU Time. I have 512 MB of RAM, and an Athlon 900. Not to shabby of a rig, certainly runs GTA3 and Flight Sim 2002 well, no choppyness (even with the globe app). Besides, the globe generator is a background app, that runs with priority set to idle. It is scheduled using another app, that downloads the cloud data and runs the renderer every 5 minutes. With my system, I don't have to worry about cpu time or ram consumption.

ActiveDesktop on the other hand, is of course neatly integrated with Windows, and I've seen a stretched JPEG on a 1 gig Celeron slow that thing down.

Let's put it this way slappy, Dodge produced the Viper, but they didn't leave out the air conditioning because it would make the car go two or three miles an hour faster. .

Okay so, you took a bitmap, converted to JPEG, then back to BMP, and got a smaller file? Don't think so. BMP uses no compression.  At best, one app may make a slightly larger bitmap than another. But take two completly different images, resize them to the same size. Then save them both, and compare the actual file sizes (not size on disk). Guess what? They're both the same. All you've done is make the image look like crap. And RAM, I've got plenty, so bring the bitmaps on.

Enough with the insults Divide. One more and I ban you, my patience meter is now reading a resounding "0" when it comes to you.
