Sorry if this has been implemented already. I think it would be awesome if FRED had WASD and mouse controls for the camera. Space is go up, control is down. :)
-
I would much rather simple have the controls in FRED customizable.
-
I would much rather have event editor keyboard shortcuts actually do anything :nervous:

I think it would be awesome if one wouldn't have to switch the mouse mode back and forth from camera mode to object placement/selection mode.
Oh wait.
Seriously though, FRED's control scheme is very precise, and easy to grasp. Why do you think that replacing it with something more complex is a good idea?

Quoted for TRUTH.

This I'm afraid. I like FRED the way it is, and while it might be a touch tricky for brand new FREDders, once you're used to it, the Freespace style controls are very intuitive and very useful.

+1
I was flying around Fred in no time when I was a wee little Fredder.
-
Don't change a thing with controls. :)
This might've been brought up, but wireframe mode is way too laggy to be used, especially with missions containing multiple capital ships. Textured mode works very well but I nevertheless still prefer to see through my ships, especially when finding smaller ships that normally would be hidden behind larger ships in textured mode.
R
-
It's true. It would be nice if it were not so. And if we can't optimize wireframe mode, could we at least set it so that it isn't the default mode?
-
If anything I'd have higher speeds in FRED. I seem to spend the majority of my time at the maximum, and still have to waaaaaaait sometimes.
-
Wait you can fly around in FRED?
What are the frigging controls.
I only know how to rotate the camera. The only way i know how to move the camera is to zoom into a tiny fighter... :nervous:

Wut... Didn't you just release your own campaign? And you never learned the basic camera controls for FRED?
Mind. Asplode.
A/Z to truck in and out.
1/3 to pan left right (numpad).
+/- to lift up down.
-
Basically descent controls. Except that the pitch left/right is reversed when you're upside down.
-
A/Z is so slooooow though. And toggling between speeds can get annoying.
-
I might be tempted to add additional controls for those of us without a numeric keypad though.

Ooo, that's me! That would be useful if I ever decided to FRED again!
My POS laptop keyboard has an fn key that only has 5 actions: F1 (moon symbol), F3 (battery symbol), Up arrow (sun with an up triangle), Down arrow (sun with a down triangle), and Right arrow (trapezoid with dots coming out of it) :(
-
F1 would be sleep, F3 IDK, maybe not actually battery, maybe hard disk, if so then it would be hibernate, Up arrow is increase brightness, down arrow decrease, right arrow I'm guessing is the switch between built-in LCD and external display/projector.
You know you can buy a separate USB numeric keypad.. linky (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006666%2040000063%20600009662&IsNodeId=1&Description=numeric%20keypad&name=USB&Order=BESTMATCH) There's about 11 of them listed there.
-
I was just ranting, I already own one of those :P
But still no pause key :(
-
Pause is probably one of the Fn alternates of one of the keys on your main keyboard on mine it's the Fn-alternate of Page Down). What make/model laptop?
-
Yay! Thank you for asking me what kind of laptop I had, it gave me the bright idea to google "dell studio xps keyboard pause" --> apparently it's fn+f12.
I am quite annoyed that they apparently were too lazy to label those :(
-
That would indeed be annoying... :ick: especially for an XPS, don't that cost an arm, a leg, and a vital organ?
-
No, that's Human Transmutation.
But close enough :P

Because numb pad and mouse are both right-handed, and if its going to be on the pad it should be 8, 4, 5, 6, not stupid and harder to use 8, 4, 6, 2...

Someone put it on the wishlist for wxFRED? :D

Someone put it on the wishlist for wxFRED? :D
I searched "wxFRED wishlist" on HLP and came up with this post alone... do I stick any FRED-related desires in a general wxFRED topic?
-
We have enough wxFRED2 wishes... what we need is a coder who will make wxFRED2 his dedicated project and shepherd it through its development.
-
i know this sounds like a total nub but... how to move aft and forward on the plane instead of the camera vector?
and i m left handed, and even tho i m a minority, wasd or customizable controls would be extremely appreciated.
-
Just line the camera up on the plane and use the camera controls. There are no other movement keys; this page (http://fredzone.hard-light.net/freddocs/concepts.html#movement) shows them all.
You can appreciate new features all you want, but I'm sorry to say that without manpower nothing will happen. Lots of us have our hands full with the projects currently on our plates.
Also, I'm left-handed too, and I've designed many missions with the current controls. They work fine, once you learn how to use them.
-
Also left-handed and found the keyboard layout easy to use. If you ask me, WASD is more right-handed because it assumes that the person would use the right hand for the mouse.
