even tho i might sound like a complete newb, but i have been having a pain trying to get the homeworld 1/cataclysm and skyboxes out of those games so i can add them to freespace, can someone point me in the right direction on how to get them? i tried dxripper, i went through the BIG files looking for any model file or textures, i could not find anything...

you are out of luck mostly. your best bet is trying to manually recreate them. as far as memory goes they are actually some sort of vector artwork. MatthTheGeek might provide some more info.

I never fiddled with HW1/HWC backgrounds. I'll see what I can gather next time I'm on my comp, but don't hold your breath.

Yup, they used something similar as the FS1 style backgrounds... some vectors with gradient shading in between them.

meaning... they are not textures but math functions? i m sorta confused...

Probably something along the lines of procedurally generated rather than being an actual texture slapped onto a sphere/box.

ahhh that explains it, but then for example in cataclysm one of the skyboxes had an animated blackhole, this dosnt sounds exactly easy to do with such method... guess i will have to screenshot stuff and try to slap a skybox myself
