Found on reddit, via slashdot. :p

The thread is pretty cool, and has led to some very interesting strategic and philosophical discussions. As well as several thought-provoking comparisons to 1984.

Ran across this earlier today- it's friggin' intense! With total tech stagnation and equality, I have no idea how anybody could break that kind of stalemate.
I saw people tossing out various tactics and strategies.... it's been ten whole years IRL, and nearly two millenia of warfare in-game. I'm sure this guy's tried just about everything by now.
-
Wow. Where's Nuke? He should be happy with the excessive nukage! ;)
-
Don't forget the ice caps have melted over twenty times.
-
in the year 3991 A.D
Vikings will surprise attack
often with nuclear weapons.
5 star post
that would make a good freespace mod
-
priceless.
-
Doesn't Civ auto-end / stop running effectively after a certain pre-defined date?

Oddly enough if you consider the lyrics of the song I used for the battle and the tech used by the enemies, my mod has already done just that.

nuke their nukes before they can nuke your nukes.
mad is so awesome!

I believe it usually gives you the option to keep playing, at least in Civ2.

I wish Revolutions did that

Fantastic! :D

So the Earth went to hell after you launched the ship to Alpha Centauri, eh?
Well, I'm sure the colonists are doing fine over there. Yep. No horrible long ideological wars or nightmarish native life.
:nervous:
-
Incredible stuff, I always felt some of the older games had a very deep and complex message and meaning behind them. Besides it's Firaxis, who made Alpha Centauri which is boatloads of this potential hellish theme. It would be great to see this whole war ended somehow, preferably by some unique and thought provoking manner rather than more nukes. ;)

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war...
-
Sounds a lot like Earth 2140.

I like and knowing your 40k lore, there were unification wars before the Empire^^
-
I like how basically apart from the names this is the world situation espoused in 1984.
-
I'm kind of impressed one of the more homicidal factions lived so long, they usually don't...

To be fair, in 1984 we are never given actual evidence the rival superpowers and the conflicts with them actually are anything more then propaganda.
Actually I think it's actually a pretty cool scenario for a strategy game, especially if you could factor in things like backsliding tech and dwindling strategic resources.

I think Civ III was the first one to include strategic resources that you needed to build certain things, and they do get depleted. Which would mean that if a game went this long in III, potentially the most powerful production units in any army would be: riflemen, artillery, and galleons.

It seems someone won the war in just 58 years. (http://www.reddit.com/r/theeternalwar/comments/uzm4w/took_58_years_ingame_but_i_pulled_it_off/)
-
All this is like a tutorial on world domination... Nuke it over several times, then pick up the pieces. :P
-
Except everyone is nuking everyone, so nobody can pick up the pieces. There aren't even many pieces to pick up since the entire world is ocean, swamps, and mountains.

Heh, I wondered how long it would be until that happened.
EDIT: That is a strategic masterpiece, and the fanfic is icing on the cake. Crap, now I'm going to have to get into the Civilization series...

Besides CIV there is also
The Tertiary Phallus of Battuta (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72032.msg1423464#msg1423464)
Please Don't Go, The Drones Need You, They Look Up To You.

I meant the guy who finished the war.
-
Yeah, but will there be any pieces left when the war is finally done?
-
Debatable, but he'll rule supreme over anything that is left. :p
-
I just found out this today, but it might be an interesting read.
An update on the eternal war (http://www.reddit.com/r/theeternalwar/comments/1g6jcd/update_to_the_eternal_war_11_year_old_civ_ii_game/) and how power corrupts.
The first comment is gold.

"War is the natural state of man" , that is what happened.
It's fun to see this is still going on.
