Well, just for a laugh I decided to make a realism mod for Freespace (I'd been watching B5 all night, if you were wondering (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif))
The general idea is that you can destroy any ship in one or two shots, you have a very limited number of missiles that are, however, powerful enough to waste a fighter in one hit. Also, you have no shields.
Suprisingly, I've found it highly playable and kinda addictive. I've only modified two weapons and a fighter so far, I was just wondering what interest there would be in this mod.

Hell, I'd give it a whack... If it is as fun as you say (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yeah, I tend to make my mods this way. I prefer fast and furious dogfights to long and fastidious gun hammering. To make it even more realist and fun (and hard), increase the damping a little (but no more than 1.0 ...). And to take sushi's words: use the velocity mod (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
And after that: post it at hlp coz I'm too lazy to do it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

This is cool... there's Sandwich's Capship Turret Mod, the Velocity Mod, JakeLogan & Carl's effects Mods - this is sweet. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

On the subject of the turrets, did you guys ever try using my arsenal turrets? They improved the defenses on ships without significantly unbalancing the game.

I would increase the dampening, but once you get a missile locked on, you need as much maneuverability as you can get, because the one missile has the ability to waste you. This is also why I'm leaving countermeasure count untouched.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about the guns though, because i have editted the test ship to only have two gun points- this is because it increases the difficulty of a kill ( if you get both shots on target, it'll destroy the enemy, but if you only get one it'll damage it to about 30%).
I'm also playing around with the idea of increasing the subsystem damage.
A small demo will be up on my server soon, and after I upload it i'll post the link.

If you want a mod balanced on realism/playability you know where to come (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Sandwich's capship turret upgrade is killer. I installed it into the tables for twilight, and that third mission with the hecate, sobek, hatshepsut, and deimos, man was that a beautiful firefight... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Ok, here's just a demo, like I said, one ship, two weapons- 3 if you include the upgraded capship lasers- and a mission. Enjoy (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Grab it here ("http://members.tripod.co.uk/sPaZm/realitymod.zip")
And for those who don't like editting the .tbl files, here ("http://members.tripod.co.uk/sPaZm/tables.zip") are the full ones.

Hah! Now we're talking! It's really awesome!!
-
About those missiles and dampening, well, I just divided the ROT by 2... you needed skills to avoid them, but it was still possible. And I'm insane, but I found quite fun dogfighting with this sliding ships in a very small asteroid field with 3x255 asteroids hehe (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Well, I'm gonna use it in one of my upcoming mods, but I was considering actually modifying all the ships in FS2.
Only problem would be that bombers would be _way_ too easy to kill, and the damage they'd do would be equivalent to a fighter...

well, for bombers, allowing them to carry much powerfull weapons to fight against capships, plus really efficient turrets (sort of machine gun laser maybe?) could balance the thing. Otherwise we can suppose that a bomber is big enough to carry a weak shield that can deflect at least a dozen of shots or two missiles?

Elaborate, please. Which turrets did you change, etc? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I can use the exact same description for my MOD...
The ones I changed here ("http://michael.randelman.com/fs2/files/capship_turrets.zip") are solely the laser turrets and the fusion mortar...

All the basic turrets. Increased shot speed and ROF but reduced damage, so you have to be more careful or you'll be taking additional hits.

my FX mod is 5X better than Jake's cause it's got missle trails and heavily improved glows and suns was done in photoshop. Jake agrees with me btw so don't say "oh well you're being mean, Mr. shivan"

Wow, someone mentioned my mod before I did. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
I like the sound of this- I'll download it and check it out later(when I have time.) The only question I have is this: Why is this the "Realism" mod? How does this increase realism? Not trying to rain on the parade (I like the idea out too- harder to hit targets but easier to kill them when you do) but the title "Realism" mod seems a bit misplaced.
Having said that, of course, I have no real alternate suggestions- typical Critic behaviour. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

How many missiles can a (real) fighter take and survive today? How many gun hits? That's why it's called the Realism Mod, one might guess...
-
Yup, that'd be it. I'm figuring that to make a fighter withstand more than one shot from a gun, it would have to reduce maneuverability significantly.
After I finish Alternate Reality though, I will be creating and releasing a mod detailing human kinds first steps into space (not in the FS universe). In that I will be using the same kind of balance, at least at the start. Heavy fighters will be able to take more than one hit. It'll be a TC, BTW (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
But first, it's time for the chickens... when I get round to finishing the last 3 ships.

sob, sounds like my (now dead) campaign, OuterSpace... A TC, first mankind spacewar, crappy ships with no shields and very limited weaponary... :me running away trying to hide my tears:
Never mind! Outerspace will live, one day or another, I'm confident in that ( the fact that I have actually some models flying in FS, some that I designed years ago, is my main consolation)

Even today, it rather depends on the fighter. An A-10 for example is capable of taking a rather impressive amount of punishment without going down. Even the lighter unarmored fighters can take a few dozen rounds without exploding, and even then usually its because of who delicate the engines are. Any flak or cannon rounds that get into a jet engine will almost always damage the turbines enough that it won't work. I'd think that one or two missiles to kill a fighter and two or three for a bomber
isn't unrealistic, and thats not counting the shields, which make an awful lot of difference.
-
Agreed. If there are no shields, than one, maybe two missiles should be enough.
But with shields, I would think you would be able to take one or two more...are you leaving the shields on?

Well, if I release this as a proper mod for FS2 it's debatable.
I think I might rebalance it so it's more like 3-4 hits from a laser and 1-2 for a missile.
-
depends where you shot, and what you shot. an hydra rocket in a wing "may" allow the ship to fly (supposing that there is no fuel tank in the wing...) an AGM64 phoenix will kill any plane in one shot I guess. in fact a sidewinder would too... and bombers are not more armoured than a fighter, now... a B2 shot by a missile will be doomed (and don't forget that they carry a huge payload. even with securities, there's always the risk of the whole stuff to explode because of fire). The A10 is trully a special case. it can fly with only half of a wing reaped, and with only one engine. But if another a10 opened fire on it with its avenger canon,; well the A10 would be doomed too. Damn the recoil of the Aveger can stop the plane even with full afterburners . bad guy hehe (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I dunno, we'll see how it goes (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Thats mostly true, but as I said most of the immediate kill effect that these missiles generate is because jet engines are unarmored and extremely fragile. ALL anti-aircraft missiles use proximity-fused fragmentation warheads to generate big clouds of flak for exactly this reason. B-52 bombers can and have taken missile hits without crashing, I've read descriptions from vietnam. Prop-driven aircraft are quite a bit more resistant to damage because the engines are somewhat harder to damage.
-
now, we musn't forget that a spacehip is different from a plane. There's no worry about aerodynamic issues, but there's more about temperature. A plane can sustain really warm temperature (the SR71 can fly up to mach 3, and must resist extremely high t°), but nothing in comparison with a space faring vehicle (not atmosphere to stop sun, or extremely cold environment when there's no sun -behind a planet, or, in fact, on the non exposed side of the ship). The US shuttle hull is much more resistant than a plane hull for this main reason, and I bet it could resist some punishment. A spacefighter, free from the aerodynamic issues, will probably have a more resistant hull than its atmospheric counterpart, just because of t°. So, I suppose a space fighter should be much more resistant than an atmospheric fighter.
-
Yes, but to counter this, the payload and dynamics of the missiles would be changed.
