Hi,
I'm willing to play this older game, because I need a bit more action as in X3...
After quite some trouble finding Freespace downloads, I think I've got what I need:
- GOG download version of Freespace 2
- OpenAL
- 3.6.12 SSE2
- Launcher
Working links were the Mirror links in http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70692.0
On my Lenovo W500 notebook, it runs smoothly at 1920x1200 at max settings.
Problems on my Computer. It's a Core i7 2600k with NVidia GTX-570 video card. Well, whatever settings I choose, the game stutters. I found out it happens every time the ingame voices appear... Hmm I don't want to turn those off... I have no idea what to do. Can't be a loading problem because stuff is on an SSD. Anyway, every hard disk is faster than the one in my notebook... Both, Notebook and PC are running Win7pro x64.
Do you have an idea?

All I can say is that it's a known issue. No idea if it's been mantised yet and/or if someone is looking into it.

Try disabling Vsync in the launcher

Doesn't change the stuttering when voice announcements come...
Hmmm, seems like I have to play it on my notebook then.

It's a problem with the head anis, being worked on.
To reduce the intensity of the stuttering you can either : disable vsync or enable fsp indicator (under testing/debug tab IIRC).
EDIT: note that it will not remove the stuttering completely, just reduce it.

Yeah, I noticed this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72924.0 where it's mentioned that FSO may stutter while doing head anim. Oh bad... It's pretty severe also without vsync, and non existent on my poorer specs notebook... Well it's ATI in that notebook but in my PC its nvidia.
-
OK I can also turn the anim off. Because some threads indicate, its all pretty vague and hard to solve problem.
A loss of playing fun, but now it runs smoothly...

Disabling the head anis worked for me too, as said above it has been noted before.

Just so you know, I confirm the issue has already been mantised (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=2417). So yes, the SCP know about it and it's on their list.
