Big thanks to vasudan admiral for help on how to make the animated clamp work! (and general understanding how the animation code functions. :p )

Great to see this being finished. Are you going to do it's container, too?

Not planning to at the moment, but to be honest the current crate does not look bad with the normals c: maybe all it needs is some crevices in the important parts and not a full build up. So maybe?

Love the design of the engines on this. Shall watch this space. :)

Awpdate, I was planning to make this post yesterday buut I got distracted by beer and friends.
Did mesh adjustment to make it resemble the retail texture, sadly I had to remove some of the details on the side. :1 , redesigned the clamp, the shape is mostly in place and maybe if I split the arms in two would be a cool addition.
Next to do is to round the rails around the engine area a bit.

(the engine area resembles a smiley face :p)

that smile is awesome
-
It's gonna om nom nom enemy ships :D
Anyway, great job! It's coming along nicely.
-
Thanks guys!
Right, spent the day modelling a 3 part clamp that is going to have an animation when docking with cargo. (hopefully c: )
Rounded the back engine and it's pretty much done by now so moving my attention to the front and start thinking on the single part turrets. Also found a second smileyface on the mesh, but not gonna reveal where it is :p
Currently planning to have the mesh done by friday or around that time.

You defined perfection *___*
-
Mesh is pretty much done, time to fix smoothing areas for details and uvmap!

-
Not to be ungrateful, because that's some damn good work... but, could we have a perspective shot from an angle of what it looks like? It's kind of hard to judge using those perfect orthographic perspectives.
-
i see so many faces
Good work! Looking very nice!

Can you find _all_ the faces? I'm pretty sure there are 5 in total. :p

Sure here's a quick render. c:

Amazing. Can't wait to see it textured.
-
Looking great.
Now for a real challenge, try making something out of the nondescript blob that is the Bast. :p

You might see it sooner then you know!

cheers! about the Bast BAH THATS A BABBY CHALLANGE! TINY CRYING BABY CHALLANGE!
Funny thing about that I was actually thinking of picking it up after the amun and newet. As for design the Bast is fairly simple and symmetrical with a huge plated top area and machinery under. As in common with most vasudan designs, but I won't pick it up or s would do before I'm done with my two next models. c:
-
Are you gonna make a shiny new cargo box (or two) to go along with this?
-
Ahem.
Great to see this being finished. Are you going to do it's container, too?

Just sayin'
-
Note, he asked for a completely new design, not enhancing the existing one. Though that's even more unlikely.
-
Thing is I'm not sure if the current crate will play nice with the docking clamp.
-
Very nice work Oddgrim. Which containers does this thing take again I forget? I have a VC3 already modeled if that is the one just don't remember ever seeing it used for anything other than target practice.

As of current the animated clamp is not completed yet or started the work animating it, but I don't think it would pose a issue right now.

cheers, the ma'at uses the VC4 crate but I'm planning to test if it's comparable with other types as well when that stage happens.
-
I'll be doing the container, so you all can rest easy now.

hooray!
update:
More stuff! I finished baking and UV mapping the freighter and vomited some rough texturing over the bits and started here and there detailing. It’s still a veeeery rough version of the final product. A lot more to do, fun fun!

Oddgrim, you're awesome. :D

QFT.
-
Nice vomit indeed.
-
Very cool! Actually the texturing reminds me somewhat of Mos Eisely from Star Wars..
-
Was that vaguely satis-esque thing on the bottom on the original?
If not, it's a nice touch :P

I belive so! the tricky part is to make it stick.. :p

Mm, yeah I can see that. The final product will in no way be like that town in a ship form though. :p

cheers! But I can't take full credit for it since the original texture does have a satis like element under as well. It's pretty cool!
Worked more on the clamp and the crate docking area with some lightmap testing. While the general armour plating around it needs some colour correction. All in all I think the clamp is looking sweet so far. c:

Think I got the docking area and the sides decently right. Going for a bit organic look at parts while retraining the stiffness of the (blurry!) retail textures. Picking up the pace I left it at 3 days ago, lets see if I can finish this before going over to try out the shiny new crate mjn made for it c:

Nice work! I'm afraid my very simple crate won't look very good against this piece of artwork...
-
Wow. That's amazing.
-
Wow, that is some very nice texturing work.
-
Went heavier on the meshsmooth than I'd have liked in some places but that texture job is drop-dead gorgeous. I also like what you did with the weird bridge thing that I had no idea what to do with, nicely done. Clamp is basically same as I'd have done if I had gotten the time to do it, not much more to say about that.
Can't wait to see it finished.

nonsense, I think it will fit and if not we will rebuild it, WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY! :D

cheers, nice to see that you mostly approve. Smoothing is well all ways changing a bit but I rather do too much then too little.
Nonsensical rambling:
Texturing.. That docking area takes up most of my focus, as for general style I really want to go for a run down cargo hauler look. (which the original model is.) Redesigned a bit on the engine area and thus had to re-bake the textures, I think it looks overall better now then before. Come to think of it, most of this will be obstructed by a huge crate.. damn it. :P

Seriously think that's one of the best FSU skinjobs I've seen. Not to nitpick but the next time you do a render could you throw the blue glows onto it?
-
beautiful, where did you learn how to texture like that?
-
This is a work of fap!!
Hooray:)

Thanks! c: , will do that after I bake the lights in. Which will be when the mapping is done.

With the help of my bestest friend, intuos 4 :p
This is a work of fap!!
Hooray:)
That.. is good.. I guess? :p
-
Baked lights test, I still have to adjust, place more lights and texturing the bridge area.
After done with the top I'll shift my attention to the underside. Making progress! ;)

I think texturing may be your calling. That is a thing of beauty.
-
Oh man that looks so delicious.
-
Oh wow!
-
Excellent textures so far Oddgrim, realy a nice piece of work :)
-
thanks guys! c:
Finished off most of the top , only some areas require tuning and polish. Started the fun part of the underside and lining up areas up for colouring and setting up lights for glow points. Actually thinking of doing some texture redesign on the clamp but that will have to wait.

incredible.
I can't believe how awesome this fishboat looks now.
-
Yeah dude, he's not joking. This is a very high quality job. :D
-
Beautiful work, Oddgrim. :)
-
Hello guys, thanks for the kind comments!
Very close to texture finish now. Only major part left is the clamp and bits here and there. c:

Hot damn.
-
oh no my pants!
dammit oddgrim!!!
-
Great work!
Would love to see the new clamp anims in action!
-
this is one hell of a great looking model sir!
-
Thanks for comments guys c: (sorry about the pants)
Hey, update:

Animation test, quality is kinda rubbish but yeah..

Cooooool!

Hey.

-
Looks really good.
-
Want it in my Freespace *___*
-
The normal maps seem to be a little over the top, or maybe is just the reflection from the lab... aside from that
-
Dat normalmap.
:jaw:
-
 Looks epic...
-

Yeah, initial impressions are that it kind of makes it look a bit... melty, I guess?
-
Thanks for nice feedback!

I believe this is due to the lack of shinemap. You are only seeing unfiltered normals here. c:
-
That was my guess too, but I figured you didn't need me to tell you to make a shine map. :p
-

Oh, mjn you can tell me to make a shine map anytime. :P
-
It's out! hooray!
download link is in the opening post.
-
Wow. It's just so beatifull. Best texture I've seen.
-
I'm not sure if it's your lighting settings, but the model looks greasy/lacquered. Edit: This might be due to the fact that your shine maps are grey-scale instead of colored. Everything reflects white (like a clear layer of laminate would) rather than the underlying color of the metal.
Aside from that, it's amazing work.
