Title: Some FRED questions (Fredopen)
Post by: Nightsteel on June 27, 2012, 06:38:48 pm
Hello,

I have some questions about FredOpen.

I now made that tutorial mission.

First: I can´t call in reinforcements. I did it exactly how they told it but when I am in the mission, there are no reinforcements. They are marked as reinforcement unit in the wing editor and in the reinforcements window the wing is there. But I still can´t get them. Its like they just don´t exist.

Second: The beta wing is not where it should be. Like they told me I made in the arrival window "near ship", I put in the GTD Relentless and made 1.000 for distance. But they are more then 7.000 away from the Relentless. How can I make this correct? Or should I disable that all and put them in per hand where I want them?

Third: Wings and formations. Is there not choice to form a wing automaticly? Must I really put in every single fighter manually to some kind of working formation to his wingmates? It looks so bad when a mission starts and all winged fighters start to reform to a wing formation ^^

That´s all for the moment :)

I have version 3_6_12.

I hope someone has some infos for me :)

There are a whole lot of different reasons why the things you mentioned don't work. To make things easier, can you open your mission using notepad and copy/paste the entire thing in www.pastebin.com?  I would like to take a look at exactly what you are doing.  (Right click the .fs2 mission file in windows, select choose default program from the menu and select notepad. Then open the file using notepad and select the top left of the text, scroll all the way to the bottom, hold shift and while holding shift select the very bottom right after all the text. You should have everything selected. Press ctrl + c. Now go to www.pastebin.com and press ctrl + v)

Things to try:
Make sure the relentless is in the mission space when the ships are set to arrive using 'near ship'

Make sure the arrival sexp condition for your reinforcement wing is set to 'true'

For the third question if you mean 'automatically position ships in the wing' then no. The easiest way in my opinion to do this is by selecting yz constraint at the top. Then select the ship type you want to deploy and deploy one of them. Form that one ship into a wing. Select that ship. While holding control, click on that ship and drag out a new one. Drag it to a position that looks like a decent enough formation. It will ask if you want to add this ship to the wing. Say yes. You can have up to six ships in a single deployment for a wing.

Welcome to HLP

Hey thanks :)

Okay then I will form the wings my self :)

Indeed I made this to true and now I can call them in oO Thanks.

http://pastebin.com/gQWGujeA      here you go. I don´t know whats wrong with Beta then. They said it does not matter where to put them in. Now I placed them near the Relentless but still... more then 7.000 away.

Thanks for your help :)

Ok I looked at your mission.

When you use 'near ship', and you have the ships in the mission from the start of the game, the ships will appear in the position you have set them in FRED. Near ship is for when they arrive during the mission using hyperspace or docking bays. To get them to arrive during the mission, you can go into the wings editor for beta wing and set the delay for departure to 1 seccond. Another way you can do it is by modifying the arrival sexp to has-time-elapsed under logic. Both ways to the same thing.

Note that delay represents the time since the sexp returns true. The ships will deploy when the arrival sexp returns true and the arrival delay has expired.

Also, I know you're not finished with your mission, but give it a title. This will make it easier to find during testing. You can go to editors -> mission specs (Shift+N) or you can open notepad and modify the title text in quotation marks. Either way works.

Thank you :)

So what exactly does that mean? I set them directly next to the ship but they still uhm.. are far away. I do not exactly understand: Why departure dalay?
I think it will be better to just delete that and put them normally next to the ship I guess. Epsilon comes in after I call for them so I guess for them its fine. But Beta is there from the beginning, so I better just give them their position by putting them where I want them.

I will give it a title soon :) I made 3 missions for a campaign long time ago. But they are lost. And I forgot almost all how to make missions, so I make this tutorial and then start to make more again :) This time hopefully I will finish it :D

Thanks again for your help :)

Its not easy to understand that all and I guess for my own missions it will be much more hard, since I do not have a guide for that any more, but it will be done :)

edit: oh lol.. I just saw that from my start the Orion is 6000 away so I guess when Beta is 7000 away it is all as it should be. Shame on me :)

Can you please help me again?

I want to know why my leviathan "GTC Guardian" does not fire its beam weapons. It worked all the time but suddenly when I once more looked into the mission - nothing.

The Fenries does fire.

Both have the beam free all command, and the Lev fires it Anti Fighter beams. But somehow it does not any more fire its capital beam weapon at the Fenris.

I tried to reset it, even to delete and replace it, nothing helped. Tried different distances, did not help.

Edit: Okay it seems while I wanted to order the fighters via script to ignore the Fenris the Leviathan did the same somehow and ignored it :/ Looks like a bug in the editor.

Okay now I have a problem with the briefing.

In the mission briefing vieh the windows switch much too fast. I selected several times, even 5000 ms. But still, it switches in a bit more then 10 seconds.

Any idea what is going wrong or what I can do to fix that?

Ahem.... 5000 milliseconds are 5 seconds. I wouldn't switch them that fast.
If that is too fast for you as well, you should try more. How about 30000 and just see what happens.
EDIT: Or maybe I don't understand the question...

I'm assuming you're talking about the Camera Transition Time Setting. If so, you're misunderstanding what the setting does. It doesn't control how long the game takes to switch between briefing stages. It controls how long one stage takes to fade into the other. That allows you to make icons move from one position to another when switching stages.
If the stages are switching too quickly, turn on voice synthesis or simply record some voice acting. That's actually what controls the length of time a briefing displays for.

Or just click the pause button

Voice is already on. It does not even go to the end. While it still is talking it already switches.

And yes, I mean the time between the stages.

So no other way?

Okay in that case its the pause button then :) But when I use it then the voice is disabled in the complete mission?

You said you're using 3.6.12.  The timing for simulated speech wasn't corrected until fairly recently, so you should try a 3.6.14 release candidate.

Oh hmm.. did not know that I don´t have the last version.

It was the only installer I found so far...

All other links I found where just a horde of single downloads instead of a full installer :(

To be fair though a RC shouldn't be in the installer anyway as it is not officially stable (RC 5 did a nice job of proving that) so without following the progress of the SCP there is no way to know

Seems all to work with the newer version :)

Still the mission briefing stages switch to fast, so its the pause function anyway then ;(
