Title: Asset question
Post by: BLARGHER on June 29, 2012, 05:09:31 am
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I had a couple of questions. First, am I right in assuming that the assets on freespacemods.net are available to use. Secondly, would I be able to use the Blue Planet: AOA weaponry?

It is sort of an unspoken rule that all assets found on HLP or FSMods are free to use unless specified otherwise (like, IIRC, TBP and WCS assets which aren't free to use). If you aren't sure, you can always check the readmes or PM whoever made the assets in question.

BP always had a very open policy. It is safe to say you can use their stuff without any trouble.

Thanks, was thinking about creating a basic mod, nothing too special.

Yes, stuff in BP is free to use by anyone, provided proper attribution is given.

Since when WCS has locked down their assets? That would be one heck of a hypocrisy, since most of their effects are taken from other mods (mostly mediavps). They did fork their code and made some of them incompatible with standard builds, but AFAIK, the models are free to use.

I did append "IIRC" because I wasn't sure. If I was wrong, then my mistake.

Well, some of them sure act like they could do such a move. Thankfully, their main jerk is a coder, and Scooby is in charge of the models (and the effects aren't even new). :)

In any case, this applies for the "if you're not sure, check the readme or send a PM" scenario.

Scooby is in charge of the models (and the effects aren't even new). :)

Most of Scooby's models were put out for general use in the Mod section anyways well before WCS or the Prologue was released, and if somebody really, really wants to try and say that they came out the WCS modpack rather than a regular Scooby release and that makes them verboten...

IIRC the only assets under restriction is the original stuff for TBP, as stated anything else open to use.  FSmods is the community distribution hub for assets, while some of it is only available in mods its all considered free for use unless specifically stated.  Credit anyone involved in the files you use and it's all good.

If you want to use B5 stuff, use the stuff from The Geometry of the Shadows (the other B5 mod) instead of TBP. ^^
Doesn't have quite the selection, but avoids the whole issue nicely, since they are good people and did say you could use their stuff if proper attribution was given.

That, and their assets are better. They have most of the important stuff in a very good quality, and without too many bugs. All that can't be said for TBP stuff, which is, to put it bluntly, a buggy mess.
Also, you can use high quality stuff from Project Zatharas (basically, everything that's original in it), since it's not restricted.
